Rally Falls Short in Playoff Loss to No. 7 South Garland

A furious fourth-quarter rally fell just short as No. 7 South Garland ended the Rangers' season with a 58-52 win in a University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 2-6A Quarterfinal on Tuesday. In front of a standing-room only crowd numbering in the thousands at Allen H.S., Jesuit's season draws to a close with a 29-6 record and the first district championship since 2014.

Senior Julius Marble led the Rangers in scoring with 23 points, hitting nine field goals and going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Marble added 11 rebounds to earn his 12th double-double of the year and close a dominating postseason performance. Over Jesuit's three postseason games, Marble averaged 24.7 points and 14.0 rebounds while shooting 58.8 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. Against South Garland, Marble added a team-leading three blocks.

Senior Max Abmas added 12 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers. Senior Anthony Hollerich scored seven points with five rebounds while sophomore Gavin Perryman added six points and five boards. The Rangers were held in check from three-point range, converting only three of 18 attempts to finish the contest 16.7 percent from outside the arc. Jesuit scored 28 points in the paint and added second chance 14 points off of 14 offensive rebounds.

Perryman scored Jesuit's first points of the ballgame with 4:30 after the Colonels opened the bout on a 6-0 run, but South Garland increased the lead back to eight with 2:07 remaining in the opening quarter. Jesuit closed the gap to four points at the end of the quarter after a jumper by Marble and fast break layup by Perryman.

The Rangers turned the end-of-quarter momentum into an 8-0 run which tied the game at 12-12 off of a put back layup by Marble with 6:15 left in the half. Senior Connor Wilson played a key role in the rally, saving a loose ball and finding Abmas for the senior's first three-pointer of the game. However, the Colonels would hold onto the lead and head into a halftime with a five-point lead after South Garland senior and Kentucky commit Tyrese Maxey converted a three-point play with five seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the third quarter, South Garland built the lead to 13 points with 4:02 remaining before Marble began the Ranger comeback with a traditional three-point play at the three-minute mark. Marble would score another put-back layup to bring the Rangers within eight points heading into the fourth quarter. Junior Darryl Brown hit a jumper in the paint to score another bucket for Jesuit, but South Garland used a 10-2 run to take a dominating, 14-point lead with 4:26 left.

The Rangers' comeback began with a pair of free-throws by Perryman and layups by Hollerich and Abmas, drawing the Rangers to within eight points with 3:18 left. A South Garland turnover provided the opportunity for Abmas to hit a huge three-pointer off a pass from Marble to close the gap to five points with 2:50 left in the game.

Marble would respond to a layup from South Garland with a three-pointer then threw down a monstrous dunk at the 1:51 mark before two free-throws from Abmas brought the Rangers to within one point. However, South Garland shut the door on the Rangers over the final 1:08 with a 7-2 run, including converting 5-of-6 free-throw attempts to clinch the game and end the Rangers' season.

Jesuit Dallas ends a stellar year which saw the Blue and Gold secure a 12-2 district record and an unblemished, 13-0 record at home. The Rangers secured early-season wins over state-ranked DeSoto, Lincoln, Mesquite, South Grand Prairie and Sulphur Springs before opening the district season 5-0. Jesuit caught the attention of the Metroplex on Jan. 2, when the Rangers upended reigning state champion and top-ranked Allen, 78-72, in Allen, Texas. Jesuit would complete the season sweep of Allen on Jan. 25 in front of a capacity crowd at Walsh Gym, upending the Eagles, 77-58.

The Rangers ended the year by clinching their third consecutive UIL Area Championship with a 56-51 win over Killeen Ellison on Feb. 22. Jesuit opened the postseason with a 71-39 victory over Sachse to clinch a bi-district championship on Feb. 19.
