Stellar Pitching Vaults Rangers to Friday Sweep

Behind a career pitching performance by senior Jack Lynch, the Rangers swept the second day of the Jesuit Dallas Baseball Classic, defeating Lovejoy, 7-0 before edging Forney, 4-3 in a nightcap comeback on Friday evening. Jesuit enters the final day of the classic with a 3-1 record heading into matchups against Prestonwood Christian and Richardson.

Senior pitcher Jack Lynch exceled against Lovejoy, hurling a one-hit shutout while striking out a career-high 13 batters. Senior Garrett Reuben led the charge offensively over the doubleheader, scattering three hits and driving in two runs. Sophomore Jordan Lawlar continued a stellar start to the tournament when a two-hit performance, driving in a team-leading three runs.

Senior Caden Carlson posted a two-RBI performance as sophomore Braxton Boyle added a pair of hits. Lawlar added a team-leading three runs, Boyle and Reuben scored twice and junior Jalon Mack, sophomores Connor Chavez, Gavin Perryman and Carlson scored one run apiece.

Jesuit and Lovejoy battled to a 0-0 stalemate through four innings. The Rangers had the opportunity to score in the bottom of the first, loading the bases with one out in the inning, but a double-play eliminated the Rangers' early rally. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jesuit erupted for seven runs on three hits to take a decisive lead.

Lawlar took a hit by pitch to lead off the frame before a double by Reuben and walk to Perryman loaded the bases. Mack forced a bases-loaded walk and Pointer ripped an RBI groundout to spot the Rangers a 2-0 lead before Carlson singled to left center to score Mack and Perryman. Lawlar crushed a triple to left field with two outs and the bases loaded, clearing the bases to send Jesuit into the fifth inning with a 7-0 lead.

Lynch took over from the fifth inning, allowing only one runner on base over the final three innings of the game while racking up four strikeouts. The senior Xavier University commit surpassed his previous career high of 12 strikeouts, recorded in 2018 against Plano West (Mar. 1) and Richardson (Mar. 20) for the penultimate out of the contest.

The Rangers battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the second game to clinch the Friday night sweep. Boyle and Reuben racked up multi-hit games as Reuben tacked on two RBI. Junior Ryan Messick went the distance for the Rangers to earn his second win of the season, striking out eight batters over six innings while allowing three runs, none of which were earned, and walking one batter.

Forney seemed poised to take quick control of the game with a first inning run, taking a 3-0 lead after scoring two runs on two hits with two Jesuit errors. The Rangers began the rally in the bottom of the fourth as Lawlar led off the inning with a single to right center. Reuben drove Lawlar home after the sophomore to break the Rangers' shutout streak.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Jesuit rallied to take a 4-3 lead. Boyle started the rally with a single through the right side, scoring on a single through the left side by Reuben. Lynch forced a bases-loaded walk to plate Lawlar to tie the game before Lawlar gave the Rangers the lead on a passed ball. With the two-hour time limit looming and the game-tying run at first base, Messick forced a game-winning fly out to right to clinch his second victory of the young season.
