Jesuit Splits Friday Series with Flower Mound, Nationally Top-Ranked Argyle

Jesuit Dallas moved to 3-1 at the Scotland Yard Classic on Friday, defeating Flower Mound, 3-2 before dropping a narrow, 3-1 decision to nationally top-ranked Argyle in the nightcap of a doubleheader played in Southlake, Texas.

vs. Flower Mound

Junior pitcher Ryan Messick frustrated the Jaguars for six innings, striking out five batters while only allowing four hits and two runs to help lead Jesuit to a 3-2 win over Flower Mound on Friday. The Rangers bounced back from an early one-run deficit to capture their fourth consecutive victory.

Seniors Caden Carlson and Marco Marrero drove in one run each to help propel the Rangers as sophomore Connor Chavez went 2-for-3 with a double. Senior Garrett Reuben forced two walks and scored a run as juniors Jalon Mack and Tanner Jones completed the Rangers' scoring column. Senior Cooper Shawl secured his second save of the season, shutting down the Jaguars over the final inning to secure the win.

Flower Mound scored in the bottom of the first on a passed ball, but Jesuit struck back with two runs in the top of the frame. Mack reached after being hit by a pitch and moved to second after a Flower Mound error. Carlson ripped a single to right, plating Mack to tie the game at 1-1 before a squeeze bunt from Marrero scored Jones to give Jesuit a 2-1 lead. Jesuit would add onto the lead after Reuben crossed the plate after another Jaguar miscue.

After yielding the opening run, Messick settled in by retiring the batters in order during the second, working out of a runner in scoring position with one out in the third and striking out two batters in the fourth. Flower Mound cut the lead to one with a home run to lead off the sixth, but Messick was able to hold onto the lead heading into the final inning. Shawl entered in relief of Messick in the bottom of the second and after giving up a hit to start the inning retired the next three batters to clinch the win.

vs. Argyle

The Rangers held a 1-0 lead through six innings, but the top-ranked team in the nation according to MaxPreps rallied in the sixth and seventh inning to hand Jesuit its first loss of the tournament in the nightcap of Friday's action. Reuben continued his strong Friday performance with an RBI as sophomore Jordan Lawlar went 2-for-2 from the plate with a pair of hits and a walk.

Senior Jack Lynch excelled against the Eagles, striking out 11 batters while allowing only one run on two hits over six innings pitched. Lynch has struck out 24 batters over his last two outings and entered the tournament as the Ranger of the Week after a career-high, 13-strikeout performance in the Jesuit Dallas baseball classic.

Chavez scored the opening run of the game after being hit by a pitch in the first, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Braxton Boyle, reaching third on a single to left by Lawlar and then scoring on a sacrifice fly to right by Reuben.

Lynch struck out nine of the first 10 batters he faced, taking a no-hit bid into the top of the sixth. However, Argyle finally broke through in the sixth with two straight hits, manufacturing a game-tying run with one out in the frame. Argyle took the lead in the seventh, utilizing one hit, two walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball to take a 3-1 lead. The Argyle pitching contingent caught its stride over the final two innings of the game, retiring the final six Rangers in order to clinch the win.
