Rangers Cap Regular Season with Wins over Plano East, Waxahachie

Jesuit baseball wrapped the 2019 regular season with a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday, closing the district slate with a 7-3 win over Plano East before defeating Waxahachie, 3-0, in non-district action on Saturday. The Rangers will head into the postseason with a 23-10 record and will face Sachse in the bi-district round of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 2-6A Tournament.

The Rangers celebrated the senior class prior to Friday's district finale against the Panthers and responded from a 3-2 deficit with a four-run fifth en route to the win. Junior Jalon Mack led the way with a 2-for-3 performance, driving in a run while scoring another.

Senior Jack Lynch drove in two runs as classmates Witt Chambers and Marco Marrero recorded one RBI apiece. Sophomore Connor Chavez capped the Rangers' offense with an RBI of his own. Senior Quinn Bowring earned his first win of the season with a strong five-inning outing, striking out five batters while only walking one. Classmate Ben Shepherd capped the contest with two innings of work, striking out three.

Jesuit took a 2-0 lead in the second off of a passed ball which scored Mack and an RBI groundout by Marrero that plated senior pinch runner Miles Page. After Plano East tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth, Jesuit struck for four runs on three hits and three Plano East errors in the bottom of the frame.

Senior Caden Carlson set the tone for the Jesuit fifth with a double to left center, moving to third after a walk to senior Cooper Shawl and a fielder's choice. Chavez tied the game with a deep fly to center, scoring Carlson to tie the game. Lynch launched a single to right which got past the Panther right fielder, allowing Chambers and senior Jaden Woodson to score before a single by Mack capped the damage, scoring Lynch to spot Jesuit a three-run lead going into the sixth.

Shepherd entered in relief of Bowring in the sixth, striking three of the four batters he faced to quickly end the inning. Chambers drove home Carlson in the sixth to increase the lead to four runs before Shepherd shut the door in the top of the seventh.

Junior Matthew Cox and sophomore Gavin Perryman combined to shutout Waxahachie as the latter hurled the final four innings of the contest and struck out six batters. Perryman additionally helped his own cause with a two-RBI performance from the late as junior Tyson Pointer tacked on a 2-for-3 clip in the batters' box.

After a scoreless opening two innings, Jesuit got on the board after Chavez walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch before stealing home. Cox worked his way out of a jam in the third as two runners were on with no outs in the inning, but the junior was able to record the next three outs to keep the Indians scoreless going into the fourth.

Pointer singled through the left side to lead off the top of the fourth before being pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Garrett Reuben. Junior pinch runner Alek Houillion scored on a sacrifice fly to left to spot Jesuit a two-run lead heading into the fourth. Perryman entered in the fourth and held Waxahachie without a hit over the next two innings while striking out four. In the top of the sixth, Reuben walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a single to left by Perryman.

Waxahachie threatened in the sixth and seventh, but Perryman was able to work his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth and a runner in scoring position during the seventh to secure the win.

The Rangers will battle Sachse in the first round of the Region 2-6A Tournament, a series which is currently scheduled to begin on Thursday. Sachse won UIL District 10-6A and is 22-4 heading into the postseason following a 10-2 win over Rowlett on Friday.
