Prosper Pulls Away Late to Defeat Jesuit in District Opener

Senior Darryl Brown scored a career-high 28 points, but Prosper scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to hold off a Jesuit Dallas rally and handed Jesuit a 61-50 loss in the district opener for both teams on Saturday at Prosper H.S.

Brown hit 10 field goals and went 6-of-10 from the floor, opening district play with a team-leading 12 rebounds to score a double-double. Throughout this season, Brown has eight double doubles and closes the winter break with four consecutive double-doubles, snagging all 12 of his rebounds on the defensive end. Junior Gavin Perryman added 10 points and a team-leading two steals while classmate Shane Hatzmann recorded a game-high five assists.

Prosper shot efficiently from the court, closing the game shooting 41.7 percent, securing 26 points in the paint and 29 points off of 21 Jesuit turnovers. The Rangers only secured four offensive rebounds while Prosper only turned the ball over 13 times.

The Rangers opened the game with eight unanswered points to take an early lead but Prosper answered right back with an 11-0 run to take a three-point lead with 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Junior Will Cordle buried a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to tie the game heading into the second quarter.

Brown scored a layup to start the second quarter to give Jesuit the lead back, but a 9-2 Prosper run put the Eagles back in front. Jesuit retook the lead on a Brown three-pointer at the 2:54 mark, but it would be the final field goal of the half for Jesuit as Prosper would claw its way to a 27-23 lead heading into halftime.

Junior Cal Linn hit a three-pointer with 5:11 left in the third to give Jesuit another one-point lead but Prosper was able to rebuild a two-possession lead by forcing two Jesuit turnovers over the next minute. A key three-pointer by Prosper negated a breakaway layup by Perryman, but the junior answered right back to cut the lead to one before Hatzmann fed Linn for a go-ahead three-pointer at the 2:15 mark. Prosper would score a breakaway layup with 14 seconds left in the quarter to head into the fourth with a two-point lead.

Jesuit's final lead came with 4:10 remaining in the fourth quarter off of a pair of free throws by Lynch, but the Rangers were held without a made field goal from the 5:15 mark to the end of the fourth quarter, allowing Prosper the opportunity to build a double-digit lead and clinch the win.

The Rangers will return to Walsh Gymnasium next Tuesday to face of against Allen. Jesuit swept Allen last season, handing the 2017 UIL 6A State Champions two losses en route to winning the UIL District 9-6A Championship. The Rangers and Eagles will square off at 7:30 p.m.
