Benton Bacile launched a penalty kick into the net to end an immensely physical, competitive showdown and advance Jesuit Dallas to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 1-6A Area Round with a hard-fought win over Arlington Bowie on Friday at Flower Mound H.S. The Rangers will play Denton Guyer in the area round on Tuesday, Mar. 30 at 7 p.m. in The Colony, Texas.
Â
Bacile's successful penalty helped the Rangers finish the extra session 5-for-5 in penalty conversions. Seniors
Grant Koshakji,
Ryan Shea and
Cullen Scott added successful conversions as junior
Alec Gomez completed the Rangers' run in the extra session. Bowie went 4-for-5 in penalties, but a missed shot that sailed over the crossbar proved to be the difference in the game.
Â
The Rangers were unable to score despite providing plenty of pressure in both halves. Jesuit earned 12 corner kicks and drew 11 free kicks, launching 15 attempts towards the goal, including six shots on target. Bowie took 11 shots, but sophomore goalkeeper
Cole Hines came up big with five saves on the night.
Â
Denton Guyer toppled state-ranked Flower Mound Marcus, 1-0, on Friday to punch their ticket to the area round. The Wildcats upended the Marauders on a 61
st minute tally by Oscar Ronquillo, and a determined defense was able to lock down a Flower Mound Marcus team that ended the regular season as the top-ranked team in the Metroplex according to the
Dallas Morning News.
