Hockey Finishes Second at Dallas Stars High School Showdown

12/1/2024 8:46:00 PM

The Jesuit Dallas hockey team competed among a stacked field to finish as the runner-up at the 2024 Dallas Stars High School Showdown, a three-day tournament held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 at the Children's Health StarCenter rinks across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Jesuit opened the tournament with a 6-0 loss to PSD Stars (Fort Collins, Colo.) and a 2-1 setback to Prosper on Nov. 29, but the Rangers earned their way into the championship game with a 6-5 victory over Odessa to conclude pool play before upending Prosper, 4-1, in the semifinal. The PSD Stars would win the tournament with an 8-1 win over Jesuit in the championship game on Sunday.

In the tournament opener, the Rangers were held to 15 shots while senior Sasha Dikun secured 29 saves for the Rangers during the contest. PSD scored three of its six games on the power play, adding its final goal of the game while shorthanded in the third period. Senior Andrew Theisen scored the lone goal for the Rangers in the team's first matchup against Prosper, as the Eagles were able to fend off a 57-shot outing by Jesuit, making a two-goal advantage after two periods stick despite a third-period rally by the Rangers. Dikun would secure 12 saves for the Rangers against the Eagles.

Junior Allen Zhang recorded a team-high three points against Odessa, scoring one goal and securing two assists. Senior Brandon Peppard secured two points for the Rangers, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Additional goals were scored by senior Tyler Woods, junior Victor Laos, senior Thomas Fino and sophomore Patrick Breen, while senior Conor Parro, Theo Knickerbocker and senior Ewan Randles each secured assists. Sophomore Thomas Strand picked up the win in goal with a 24-save performance.

In the tournament semifinal against Prosper, junior Wade Bryan opened the scoring for the Rangers with a power play goal in the first. Prosper would score late in the second to tie the contest heading into the final period of regulation, but the Rangers would score three unanswered to capture the win. Zhang, junior Rex Garrick and sophomore Nathan Morris lit the lamp in the third to give the Rangers space to secure the win.

Bryan and Zhang would add assists to finish the bout with two points apiece while senior Danny Myung, Theisen, Randles, junior Everett Sahadevan and junior Owen DeLoach would tack on assists for the Rangers. Strand secured his second win of the tournament with 18 saves. Theisen scored Jesuit's final goal of the tournament, an unassisted tally late in the first period, but three unanswered goals by the PSD Stars and a stifling defense that held the Rangers to seven shots concluded the Rangers' stellar comeback run.

The Rangers will return to league action on Wednesday, Dec. 4 as the Blue and Gold will face Frisco West for the second time this season. Jesuit blanked West in the first matchup between the two teams, earning a 3-0 win on October 16. Puck drop is set for 6:45 p.m. at the Richardson StarCenter.
