Hockey Finishes 2023-24 Season at USA Hockey National Championship Tournament

3/26/2024 8:16:00 PM

Jesuit Dallas hockey concluded the 2023-24 season at the 2024 Chipotle-USA Hockey High School National Championship Tournament, picking up a victory in pool play to highlight another successful season on the ice. The Rangers began the tournament with a 2-1 loss to North Broward Prep (Fla.) before upending Oakdale (Md.), 3-2 in the second game before falling to national championship runner-up Brookings (S.D.), 4-2, in the final game of pool play.

Against North Broward Prep, the Rangers were outshot, 37-23, but senior goalkeeper Misha Saratovtsev kept the Rangers in the game with 35 saves in goal. The Rangers did not secure a power play opportunity during the game, but freshman Maxwell Reynolds scored with 6:35 remaining in the third period off an assist by sophomore William Hubbell for the Rangers' lone goal of the contest.

Oakdale struck first on Thursday, taking a 1-0 lead into the second period. Neither team scored in the second until the 1:55 mark of the period, when senior Jack Bowdich notched an unassisted tally to tie the game, 1-1. The Rangers held Oakdale to 0-for-2 on the power play in the second period, opening the door for Bowdich's equalizer.

In the third period, Oakdale put the Rangers on the power play for the second time in the contest with a tripping penalty at the 16:08 mark. Sophomore Wade Bryan cashed in on the man-up opportunity, scoring off assists by juniors Conor Parro and Andrew Theisen to give the Rangers their first lead of the tournament. Bowdich would score his second goal of the game off a feed from Saratovtsev with 11:03 remaining, providing the Rangers a two-goal advantage.

Oakdale scored with 8:22 left, but the Jesuit defense was able to keep the Bears away from the game-tying goal down the stretch of regulation. Saratovtsev picked up 31 saves in the win.

Saratovtsev recorded 36 saves against Brookings, while Jesuit Dallas goals were scored by Bryan and senior Connor Sughrue. Seniors Liam Placke and Asher Yarbrough picked up assists for the Rangers in their final game of the 2023-24 season.

Jesuit Dallas earned its way into the national tournament by securing its sixth straight Texas Amateur Hockey Association (TAHA) Division I Pure Division State Championship in January. The championship also marked the 10th state title in program history.
