BOX SCOREThe Jesuit Dallas Rangers snapped a four-game skid in comeback fashion, handing first-place Coppell its second loss of the season, 5-3, on Dec. 17 at the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Farmers Branch, Texas.
In a defensive struggle between the two squads, the Rangers made five of their nine shots count, scoring three third-period goals en route to the victory. Jesuit Dallas (5-4-0) trailed, 3-2 late in the third, then scored three goals in the final two minutes for the victory. The Rangers were led by a pair of goals and an assist by
Louis Helsen IV, who scored the game-winning goal with 1:33 remaining on the clock.Â
Michael Schmidt scored his seventh goal of the season to tie the game with 1:58 left in the period, while Nicholas Mersch's first goal of the season gave the Blue and Gold an early lead in the first.Â
Brendan Gibbs sealed the Ranger victory, scoring an empty netter with 13 seconds on the clock.Â
George McBey made four saves in net to pick up the decision.
Coppell (7-2-0) struck first, finding the back of the net 1:43 into the first period to take the early lead. Helsen notched his first goal of the afternoon with 6:28 remaining to tie the game before Mersch capitalized off of assists from
Anthony Calabrese and
Nicholas Colombo to send Jesuit Dallas into the second period with the lead.
Two unanswered goals by the Cowboys gave Coppell a 3-2 lead headed into the third period. The two squads battled throughout the third, but the Rangers finally broke through when Schmidt found twine on a pass from Helsen to tie the game late. Helsen followed with a goal 25 seconds later to give Jesuit Dallas the lead before Gibbs' empty-netter provided the Rangers with a huge win against the AT&T Metroplex Varsity Gold Division leader.
After breaking for the holiday season, the Rangers will return to the Dr. Pepper StarCenter in Richardson, Texas to take on Allen at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7.
