Sophomores
Reid Hatzmann and
Marcus Hill combined for 33 points, but a late charge by the Blue and Gold fell just short as Jesuit Dallas dropped a 69-59 decision on the road Monday afternoon to Cedar Hill, ranked ninth in the most recent
MaxPreps.com Texas Basketball Poll.
Hill led the Rangers with 21 points, hitting five three-pointers, his second-highest single game total this season following seven three-pointers against Highland Park on Nov. 24. Hatzmann added 12 points, additionally tacking on a team-leading four assists. Senior
Ben Kunasek and sophomore
Michael Jankovich pulled down six rebounds apiece, while junior
Jacob Palisch scored six points, adding five boards.
Jesuit Dallas (7-4) out-rebounded Cedar Hill (11-1), 29-27, and scored 14 second chance points, but were outscored in the paint, 34-26, by the Longhorns. In addition, Cedar Hill scored 20 points off of 18 Ranger turnovers, finishing the game shooting 53 percent from the field and 9-of-20 from outside the arc.
A free-throw bucket by Regan with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter gave the Rangers a 12-11 advantage, their first lead since scoring the first basket of the game. Shooting 5-of-11 in the first quarter from three-point range to quell a 6-2 Jesuit Dallas advantage in the paint, Cedar Hill ended the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 17-12 lead into the second.
An 11-2 Cedar Hill run over a 3:49 span during the second quarter gave the Longhorns a 16-point lead, but Jesuit closed the half on a 5-1 run. Hatzmann, who went 4-for-4 with a pair of three-pointers to open the game, hit a running jumper and three-pointer within the final 90 seconds of the half to slice into the Cedar Hill lead, sending the Blue and Gold into the break trailing, 37-25.
Jesuit opened the third quarter shooting 6-of-9 from the floor to cut the deficit to single digits with 1:46 left in the quarter, but a 12-2 run by Cedar Hill that spanned the end of the third into the first two minutes of the fourth spotted the Longhorns a 19-point lead with 6:07 left in regulation. The Rangers hit five three points over the final six minutes, including four from
Marcus Hill, but the late push from Jesuit Dallas wasn't enough to topple the Longhorns, who scored six points in the paint down the stretch to keep their lead intact.
The Rangers will next break for the holidays, resuming play at the 2015 Allen Holiday Invitational, set to begin on Monday, Dec. 28, set to start the three-game tournament against Grand Prairie at 4 p.m.
