Four Rangers posted double-digit scoring performances, helping the Rangers to a decisive, 72-21 win over Xavier College Prep (Calif.) in the first round of the 2015 Knights of Columbus Dallas Classic on Thursday night at Walsh Gymnasium.
Jesuit Dallas (4-1) finished the evening shooting 13-of-28 from three-point range and 46.4 from the field, led by sophomore
Michael Jankovich, who hit 3-of-5 shots from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. Classmate
Marcus Hill knocked down a team-high four three pointers to finish with 14 points, while junior
Mitch Prendergast and sophomore
Reid Hatzmann finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.Â
Senior
Rusty Landon pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, while Hatzmann tacked on a team-high five assists. In addition, Jankovich and senior
Shawn Regan recorded six rebounds each, and Kunasek recorded a pair of steals to lead the team. The Jesuit Dallas reserves combined for 34 points, include a perfect, 3-for-3 shooting night from sophomore
Keegan Nwosu.Â
The Rangers blanked the Saints in the first quarter, forcing nine turnovers en route to a 10-0 advantage heading into the second. Xavier scored its first points of the game with 6:40 remaining in the second quarter, but the Jesuit Dallas pressure defense held the Saints in check for the entirety of the first half, allowing the Blue and Gold to enter the break with a 31-8 lead.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Hill provided a half-opening spark for the Rangers, who bolstered their lead to 36 points in the waning moments of the third quarter. After Xavier missed a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the quarter, Jankovich pulled down the rebound and found Kunasek running down the court.Â
Kunasek caught Jankovich's pass, stopped behind the three-point line and buried the bucket as the buzzer sounded to give the home squad a 58-19 lead heading into the final quarter. Jesuit Dallas finished a definitive victory by only allowing two points to the visiting Saints in the fourth.
The Rangers will take on Amarillo Tascosa, who defeated J.J. Pearce earlier on Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the Knights of Columbus tournament. Fans are encouraged to participate in the annual Teddy Bear Toss on Friday night. After the first Jesuit Dallas field goal of the evening, fans will throw their stuffed animals onto the court, all of which will be donated to Children's Hospital. Free admission will be provided to anyone who brings a stuffed animal to Friday's game.
