Rangers Fall to No. 16 Allen on Overtime Buzzer-Beater

Junior Mitch Prendergast hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining in regulation, giving Jesuit Dallas a one-point lead late against Texas state-ranked No. 16 Allen.  However, the Eagles scored buzzer-beaters at the end of regulation and overtime to narrowly escape the Rangers, 85-83, in the Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union Bracket Championship game of the In-and-Out Burger Allen Holiday Invitational, held on Wednesday evening at Allen High School.

Sophomore Michael Jankovich earned his third all-tournament accolade of the season after averaging over 20 points per game during the Rangers' four-game run, scoring a team-high 27 points on Wednesday. Jankovich closed out the contest 5-of-8 from three-point range, adding a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Prendergast, who also picked up all-tournament plaudits, finished Wednesday's contest with 23 points, shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc while adding four rebounds and a pair of assists.

Senior Shawn Regan brought down a team-leading eight rebounds, while sophomore Marcus Hill notched another double-digit performance, scoring 10 points for the Jesuit Dallas effort.  Second year Reid Hatzmann recorded a team-high five assists, tacking on nine points while seniors Ben Kunasek and Rusty Landon logged three assists teach.

Jankovich buried his first three shots from beyond the arc, giving the Rangers (10-5) an early 9-8 lead that resulted in a 26-15 advantage at the end of the first quarter.  Leading by 12 points early in the second, Jesuit entered halftime ahead 40-37 after withstanding a 14-2 Eagles run late in the opening half.

Midway through the third, Allen utilized a 16-0 lead to enter the fourth quarter leading, 57-55.  A three-point bucket by Hatzmann and layup by Jankovich gave the Blue and Gold the lead back, 60-59, with 6:32 left in the fourth.  The two squads continued to trade leads down the stretch, as Allen led, 68-67, with 1:10 remaining in regulation before Prendergast's three-pointer returned the lead to Jesuit.

The Eagles were unable to convert the game-winning bucket on their next possession, sending Prendergast to the line for a pair of free throws.  Converting both, the junior set the stage by giving the Rangers a three-point lead with 2.9 seconds remaining.  Allen tied the game with a buzzer-beating three pointer from well behind the three-point line, sending the championship game into overtime.

Prendergast scored nine points in the extra session, while Hatzmann tied the contest at 83-83 with under a minute remaining in overtime after converting a pair of free throws. Allen was able to beat the buzzer again on a chaotic series of events in the waning moments of the game, capped with a tip-in of a missed layup that rolled around the rim before falling through the cylinder as the horn sounded.

After closing out the non-district schedule on Wednesday, the Rangers will open University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A play on Saturday, Feb. 2 on the road against Irving at 2 p.m.
