No. 11 Raiders End Rangers' Upset Bid in Overtime

Marcus Garrett scored a game-tying free throw with 0.9 seconds remaining in regulation, then buried a game-winning three to send the Texas state-ranked No. 11 Skyline Raiders a 41-38 win over Jesuit Dallas in the Rangers' regular season finale on Tuesday evening.

The Rangers (20-9, 10-4 UIL 9-6A) shot 43.8 percent from the floor and 8-of-14 from behind the arc, led by a team-high 16 points from sophomore Michael Jankovich. Junior Jacob Palisch closed out the contest with six points and a team-high five rebounds while senior Ben Kunasek posted a team-leading four assists.

Skyline scored the first bucket of the contest, but the Rangers responded with a trio of three-pointers, the first two buried by Hill before Jankovich gave the squad a 9-2 lead with 5:17 remaining in the first quarter. Jesuit would take a 14-8 lead into the second, shutting the Raiders out over the last 2:59 of the opening stanza.

A layup by Prendergast pushed the Jesuit lead to eight points, but the Raiders would use an 11-3 run to tie the contest with 1:27 left in the half. Jankovich took a hard foul while driving across the baseline, converting both free throws to put the Rangers back in front.

The Jesuit Dallas defense stood firm down the stretch, again locking down on the Raider shooters and forcing a miss in the final Skyline possession of the half to give the visitors the halftime lead.

The Raiders took the lead with back-to-back buckets to lead off the third, but Palisch snagged several critical defensive rebounds during the subsequent Skyline possessions, while the Rangers took advantage of a Raider trap to get several open looks inside the paint, taking a six-point, 32-26 lead with 46 seconds left in the third.

Skyline cut the Ranger lead to a single point with 6:55 left, before a huge three-pointer by junior Mitch Prendergast put the visitors ahead by two possessions with six minutes left. Skyline began to hold the ball down the stretch, closing the fourth on a 7-3 run. Garrett earned a trip to the free throw line at the buzzer, missing the first free throw but sending the second through the net to tie the game and send the Rangers to overtime for the fourth time this season.

After winning the tip, Skyline was able to hang onto the ball for the first 3:56 of the four-minute overtime period after securing a pair of possession-extending offensive boards. Garrett pulled up from the left wing to drain a three-pointer with four seconds left, and a last-ditch effort by Prendergast was on line but fell just short of the basket at the buzzer.

The Rangers will now wait to learn of their University Interscholastic League (UIL) Bi-District Round opponent, set to battle a member of District 10-6A at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Richardson Berkner.
