A phenomenal outing by senior starting pitcher
Kyle Muller and a fourth inning rally was enough to send Jesuit Dallas to its first University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Baseball State Championship in program history, courtesy of a 2-0 win over Langham Creek on Friday at Dell Diamond.
Muller, who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves with the 44th pick in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Amateur Draft on Thursday, secured his ninth win of the year with a complete game three-hitter for the Rangers (35-8-2), striking out nine batters en route to the victory. Despite walking four batters, Muller worked out of numerous jams against the Lobos out of Houston, who left seven runners on base.
Junior
Will Guzman broke the game open in the fourth with a RBI single that scored the contest's first run. Senior
Matt Horvath added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for his 18th RBI of the season, while Muller, fellow seniors
Pete Hamrick,
Jared Bond,
Jared Kengott, and junior
JT Mix logged one hit each. Sophomore McCoy Lopez and Bond scored the Rangers' two runs.
Muller singled in the first, but an inning-ending double play quickly stopped the early Jesuit spark. Â Langham Creek (30-13) placed runners in scoring position during the first and third innings, but Muller kept the game scoreless. Kengott cracked a triple to right to lead off the third, but again Jesuit could not cash in on the chance, sending the game into the fourth scoreless.
Â
Jesuit finally broke through against Langham Creek starter Connor Ferguson in the bottom of the fourth. Bonner reached base after being hit by a pitch before Bond singled to move pinch runner Lopez to scoring position. Guzman cracked a 2-2 pitch up the middle, scoring Lopez for the first run of the ballgame. Horvath followed with a sacrifice single to center, plating Bond for a 2-0, Jesuit Dallas lead.
Langham Creek responded to the Rangers' two-run fourth with a leadoff single in the fifth, advancing the runner to third before Muller struck out the final out of the inning. In the sixth, the Lobos again had the tying run at the plate, but a groundout to third kept Langham Creek at bay.
Facing elimination in the seventh, the Lobos secured a leadoff walk, but Muller would not allow another base runner, recording two strikeouts and a groundout, including his ninth strikeout of the afternoon to end the game and send the team spilling out of the dugout to celebrate Jesuit's first ever state championship final berth.
The Rangers will play either San Antonio Johnson or Amarillo in the 11:30 a.m. UIL 6A State Championship game on Saturday afternoon. The contest will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports Southwest.
