Efficient Offense Propels No. 21 Jesuit Dallas to Season-Opening Win

An impressive offensive showcase opened the season for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) No. 21-ranked Jesuit Dallas basketball team in an 84-63 win over Harker Heights on Friday as part of the Cowtown Classic in Fort Worth, Texas.
 
Senior Keagan Nwosu erupted for a career-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Four members of the Jesuit Dallas lineup finished the game in double digits, including 20 points from senior Marcus Hill and 18 points from junior Max Abmas. Junior Julius Marble debuted on the varsity roster with a double-double, scoring 11 points and dragging down a team-high 10 rebounds while senior Reid Hatzmann posted a team-high six assists.
 
Jesuit Dallas (1-0) shot 51.9 percent from the floor and 40 percent from outside the arc, out-rebounded Harker Heights (0-1), 37-24. The Rangers added 36 points in the paint and 17 second chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds.
 
How it Happened
  • Jesuit opened the game shooting 5-for-10 from the floor to secure a 15-8 lead with 1:10 remaining in the first quarter. Hill scored seven of Jesuit's first 15 points to help usher the early offensive success. Senior Chris Horton buried a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter to send Jesuit into the second leading, 18-10.
     
  • Harker Heights began to garner momentum in the second half, but Jesuit kept a dominating lead heading into the halftime break. A six-point run handed the Rangers a 12-point lead and Abmas punctuated a dominant first half with a deep three-pointer to send Jesuit into the break with a 42-31 lead.
     
  • The Rangers opened the second half on a 14-9 run to further their lead. Increasing the lead to 19 points with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter. Jesuit shot 60.9 percent in the second half to cruise to the victory, taking a 20-point lead on Nwosu's first bucket of the second half and never trailing by more than 19 down the stretch.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Jesuit was efficient in all facets of the game, shooting 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the free-throw line and 40 percent from three-point range to lead 89.2 percent of the contest.
     
  • The Rangers exhibited an impressive ability to distribute, finishing the contest with 18 total assists. Eight of the nine Rangers that played in Friday's game recorded an assist as Horton finished second on the team with four assists followed by three from Nwosu and two from Hill.
