A fifth-inning run scored by senior
John Guzman provided enough insurance for senior
JJ Montenegro, who threw a three-hit shutout to propel Jesuit Dallas past Richardson, 1-0, on Friday evening at Wright Field.
Â
Montenegro struck out seven and walked four, keeping Richardson off the scoreboard for seven innings for his second victory of the season. Lopez, senior
Mark Ready, sophomore
Garrett Reuben secured hits for the Rangers (12-10, 2-2 UIL 9-6A), while sophomore
Jaden Woodson drove in the Rangers' lone run of the game on a fielder's choice.
Â
Richardson (10-10, 0-4) threatened in the second inning, placing a runner in scoring position, but an inning-ending strikeout by Montenegro ended the threat. Jesuit would place Woodson on third in the bottom of the fourth with one out, but the Rangers were unable to take advantage, sending the game into the fifth scoreless. The Eagles once again had an opening in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs, but once again the Jesuit defense held, retiring the side with a groundout.
Â
Senior
Michael Schoettmer was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth. Pinch runner Guzman moved to second with a sacrifice bunt by senior
Alex Lengyel, and was sent to third on a walk forced by Ready. With two outs in the inning, Woodson sent a ground ball up the middle of the infield that was snagged by the shortstop and thrown to second, but Ready beat the throw to keep the inning alive, plating Guzman and giving Jesuit the lead.
Â
Montenegro battled once again in the top of the sixth, facing a runner on third with one out. Two strikeouts kept the Eagles scoreless heading into the final inning. The senior put the finishing touches on the win with a seventh inning-opening strikeout, and the game ended on a double play lineout with a Richardson runner in scoring position.
Â
Jesuit will return to Wright Field on Tuesday, Mar. 28, when the Rangers welcome Skyline for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
