Game Recap: Baseball - Varsity |

Strong Pitching Performances Spark Saturday Split

Senior pitcher Heath Vankirk tossed a complete game to propel the Rangers to a split on the final day of the Jesuit Dallas Baseball Classic, closing the weekend with a 5-0 win over Bishop Lynch on Saturday at Wright Field. The Rangers fell to Forney, 2-1, in extra innings to begin the day, finishing the classic with a 4-2 record.

Vankirk secured his second win of the year with seven strong innings of work, striking out a pair of batters, walking none and only allowing five hits to the Friars. The Rangers (7-5) plated two runs in the first inning off of a double by sophomore Jaden Woodson, who finished the contest 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Senior Mark Ready led Jesuit offensively with three hits, closing the bout 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run driven in.

Senior John Guzman added a pair of hits, Will Guzman earned a pair of walks along with a hit, while seniors Alex Lengyel, Michael Schoettmer, junior Maccoy Lopez and sophomore Julian Colombo picked up one hit apiece.

In the third, Ready scored on a Bishop Lynch error to improve the Jesuit lead. Sophomore Garrett Reuben beat out a double play ball, allowing Colombo to score a fifth-inning run. Ready drove in his first RBI of the afternoon in the sixth, plating Woodson and spotting the Blue and Gold a five-run lead. Vankirk wrapped up the shutout in the seventh to secure Jesuit's fourth victory of the classic.

Jesuit was limited from the plate against Forney, scratching one run across on four hits in a back-and-forth affair that saw no runs scored until extra innings. Senior Miles Okamoto recorded another strong performance from the rubber, following last week's no-hitter with 7.2 innings on the mound and eight strikeouts.

Forney was limited to four hits during the first seven innings, but broke through in the eighth with two runs on three hits. Jesuit staged a comeback attempt in the bottom of the inning, scoring one off of a double to right center by Schoettmer, but left the game-tying run on third.

On Thursday, Mar. 9, the Rangers will travel to Frisco, Texas for a 10 a.m. first pitch against the Frisco Liberty Redhawks at Dr. Pepper Ballpark to begin their three-game stint at the Frisco Baseball Tournament. Jesuit's 5 p.m. Thursday nightcap against Liberty Christian will take place at Wright Field.
