Garcia's Game-Winner Positions Jesuit for Late Season Push

Senior Alex Garcia scored his first goal of the season with 14:43 remaining in regulation, propelling Jesuit Dallas past Lake Highlands, 2-1, in a physical University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A clash on Friday, Mar. 3 at Postell Stadium.

Garcia scored a header in the 66th minute off of a free kick placed inside the box from fellow fourth year Tommy Flaim, breaking a late tie between the two district rivals. After a scoreless first half, senior Will Kennard opened the scoring for Jesuit, scoring four minutes into the second stanza. Junior Joseph Banul worked all 80 minutes in goal for Jesuit, making eight saves while picking up the decision.

The Rangers (13-3-1, 10-1-1 UIL 9-6A) controlled the pace early, taking four shots in the first 12 minutes of the contest. Senior Christian Lerma launched three attempts on target, while fellow senior Ethan Moore kept the momentum on the Rangers' side with a shot on goal with 28:37 left in the half. With 10:52 remaining in the opening stanza, Lerma forged a breakaway opportunity, but the Lake Highlands goalkeeper came off the line to make the save.

In total, the Wildcats (7-7-4, 4-6-2) stopped 10 Jesuit shots in the first, sending six attempts of their own, including four on target, but Banul was able to keep the bout scoreless going into halftime with four first half saves. Lake Highlands' best opportunity in the first half came off a header from 15 yards out, which clanged off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

After Kennard's go-ahead goal, the Wildcats turned up the pressure on the Rangers, sending two attempts on goal before scoring in the 29th minute. Attempts on goal by Lerma and senior Chase Burciaga were turned aside before Garcia's game-winner. Lake Highlands launched two shots over the final 15 minutes, but the Ranger defense shut down the Wildcats over the final eight minutes to clinch the victory.

On Tuesday, Mar. 7, the Rangers will host W.T. White at Postell Stadium. Scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start, Jesuit will hold its annual senior night prior to kickoff. The regular season will draw to a close on Friday, Mar. 10, when the Rangers travel to Wildcat-Ram Stadium to battle Berkner.
