Jesuit fell victim to a late second-half goal from J.J. Pearce, seeing a nine-game winning streak and undefeated record in University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A play, 1-0, against the Mustangs on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at J.J. Pearce High School.
The Rangers racked up seven shots throughout the contest, including four attempts in the second half, but were held scoreless for the first time since a 0-0, penalty kick loss to Sachse on Jan. 13. The Mustangs scored in the 48th minute to throw UIL District 9-6A intoflux, and allowing Coppell to tie Jesuit atop the district standings heading into the final three district games.
In the first half, J.J. Pearce attempted seven shots, including two that necessitated saves from senior goalkeeper
Luke Ostrander. Junior
Christian Lerma placed a shot on goal in the 15th minute, and senior
Ethan Moore sent an attempt towards the Mustang goal in the 35th minute, both of which were turned aside by the J.J. Pearce goalkeeper.
The second half saw Jesuit come out firing aiming for the go-ahead goal. Senior
Chase Burciaga sent a shot high 4:25 into the stanza, followed by a shot from Lerma in the 19th minute that was saved. With 25 minutes remaining in the second half, senior
Tommy Flaim took a free kick from 35 yards out, sending the ball past the Mustang keeper, but the shot hit the right post to keep the game scoreless.
J.J. Pearce held Jesuit without a shot over the final 16:13 of the second half, allowing the Mustangs the opportunity to score the game-winner in the waning moments.
Jesuit (12-3-1, 11-1-1 UIL 9-6A) will look to rebound against Lake Highlands at Postell Stadium on Friday, Mar. 3. Kickoff between the Rangers and Wildcats is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
