Senior shortstop
Mark Ready went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, propelling Jesuit Dallas past W.T. White in the annual "Battle for the Saddle", handing the Rangers their fifth straight district win on Friday, April 21.
Â
Sophomore
Jaden Woodson drove in a pair of runs, while classmate
Julian Colombo went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Jesuit (19-11, 9-3 UIL 9-6A) saw its top four hitters record four of the team's eight hits, including impressive nights from Ready and Woodson alongside a hit from sophomore
Garrett Reuben. Senior
Michael Schoettmer and junior
Tyler Murrah closed the book on Jesuit's offensive production with run-scoring singles, while Murrah scored a team-high two runs.
Â
Senior J.J. Montenegro shutout the Longhorns, throwing seven innings, striking out seven, and only allowing four hits. The Jesuit pitching staff has been impeccable during the team's winning streak, only allowing six runs, three of which are earned, holding opponents to a .175 batting average while striking out 30 hitters. By comparison, the Rangers have hit .381 during that five-game stretch, averaging six runs per game.
Â
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw after two innings before Jesuit scored two in the third. Murrah reached on an error, stealing second before scoring on a single to center by Ready. Woodson later drove in the Santa Clara University commit with a double to right center, his team-leading eighth double of the year.
Â
Jesuit did the remainder of its damage in the fourth, plating five runs on five hits. A Reuben double to left center kicked off the inning before a single through the left side by Colombo put runners on the corners. Jesuit's third run scored on an error by W.T. White, and Schoettmer laced another single between the shortstop and third baseman to plate Colombo and increase the lead to four runs.
Â
Back-to-back RBI singles by Murrah and Ready scored seniors
Will Guzman and
Alex Lengyel, and a sacrifice fly by Woodson brought Murrah home for what would be Jesuit's final run of the game.
Â
W.T. White (17-11, 5-7) threatened to score in the sixth after a leadoff single and back-to-back groundouts placed a runner at third, but Montenegro retired to the side to limit the damage. The University of Arizona commit shut the door after allowing a two-out double in the seventh, clinching his second shutout of the 2017 season and the fourth shutout of his career.
Â
With the season sweep of W.T. White, Jesuit clinches a playoff berth and is assured of a top-three finish in University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A. The Rangers will begin their final regular season series on Tuesday, April 25, when Jesuit hosts Berkner on senior night. The Jesuit baseball class of 2017 will be honored at 7 p.m., with first pitch between the Rangers and Rams set for 7:30 p.m.
