GEORGETOWN BOUND: Jesuit Soccer Earns Third State Tournament Berth

Senior Tommy Flaim scored a seventh-minute penalty kick goal, junior Andrew Gilchrist added a tally in the 36th minute, and a determined Jesuit Dallas defense withstood a 21-shot onslaught from the Sachse Mustangs in a 2-0 win in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region 2-6A Championship on Saturday, April 8 at Kelley Reeves Athletic Complex. With the victory, Jesuit Dallas advances to the third UIL 6A State Tournament in program history.

After stopping an early salvo from Sachse, Jesuit (20-3-1) procured a corner kick chance in the seventh minute. During the corner, senior Will Kennard was pulled down in the box, spotting Jesuit a penalty kick change. Flaim sent a scorching ball into the lower right corner of the goal for the game-opening tally, scoring his fifth goal of the year in a critical moment, allowing Jesuit to settle back on defense and limit the Mustangs (20-4-1) offensively.

Over the ensuing 20 minutes, Sachse attempted seven shots, one on target, while earning three corner kicks and a free kick. In the 35th minute, Sachse forward Angel Rodriguez fired a free kick that got through the defense and looked destined for an equalizer, but senior Jonah Brunel raced in and cleared the ball off the line with mere inches to spare.

Lerma took advantage of the numbers and raced down the near side of the field, finding an unmarked Gilchrist, who powered home a shot from 15 yards out for a two-goal lead.

The second half was dominated by Sachse, who procured 10 corner kick chances while sending 12 shots towards the Ranger goal down the homestretch of regulation. The Jesuit defense kept the Mustangs in check, forcing low-percentage shots from distance, securing its fourth shutout of the postseason and advancing to next week's tournament in Georgetown, Texas.

Jesuit will face Juarez-Lincoln in the UIL 6A State Semifinal on Friday, April 15 at either 5 or 7:30 p.m. The winner of Friday's first semifinal will meet the winner of Sam Houston and Dobie in the state title game on Saturday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. All games will take place at Birkelbach Field.
