Jesuit Drops District Bout to Top-Ranked Allen

On another rainy night in North Texas, Jesuit Dallas out-possessed the top-ranked team in Texas and held Allen to 3-of-8 on third down chances but fell to a high-powered Eagle offense, 43-14, on Friday evening at Eagle Stadium. Junior EJ Smith tallied his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game while a career performance by junior Jack Barton assisted in the Ranger effort.

Smith carried the ball 22 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Barton added a career-high 12 tackles, racking up the most total tackles since 2015 with 11 solo stops, one assisted tackle and a pass breakup. Junior Kevin Shuman completed 7-of-14 passes for 41 yards before senior Brody Hilberth moved behind center midway through the second quarter, completing two passes for 35 yards. Junior Rance Holman tacked on two completions for 33 yards, earning his first varsity completions in the process.

Senior Travis Whisler added a team-leading four receptions for 57 yards while Christian Allocco snagged a team-high 34-yard reception on a fourth-quarter pass from Holman. Junior Zach Pendola secured seven tackles while junior Houston Hummel recorded the team's lone sack of the game in the first quarter. Junior Bernardo Gonzalez averaged 32.5 yards per punt, launching six punts during the contest.

Jesuit held the ball for 29:52 of the 48-minute game compared to the 18:08 recorded by Allen. The Rangers converted 7-of-16 chances on third down and scored on both of their trips inside the red zone.

How it Happened

  • With rain falling on the crowd at Eagle Stadium, Jesuit came out with momentum defensively, forcing a pair of three-and-outs in a back-and-forth opening stanza. The Rangers took up 5:03 of the first quarter during a 10-play, 37-yard drive that stalled at the Jesuit 45-yard line. Allen responded with a nine-play drive which culminated with the game opening score three seconds into the second quarter.

  • After a three-and-out by Jesuit, Allen looked poised to drive down the field once again. On first-and-10 from the Jesuit 42, the Rangers nearly came away with a game-changing fumble as Allen quarterback Grant Tisdale lost the ball on the snap. Houston Hummel and senior Andrew Gregory were unable to secure the ball but brought the Allen quarterback down for a loss on the play. However, the Eagles were able to string together a 62-yard drive for their second touchdown of the day, taking a 14-0 lead with 7:21 remaining in the half.

  • Allen scored its final touchdown of the first half on a 39-yard pass from Tisdale to Oklahoma commit Theo Wease, taking a 20-0 lead. The Eagles then took advantage of a Jesuit interception to regain possession at the Ranger 27-yard line, but the defense held firm to reduce the damage to a 23-yard field goal with 1:35 remaining before halftime.

  • Junior Jhalen Spicer jump started the Rangers in the second half with a 59-yard kickoff return to give Jesuit the ball at the Allen 39-yard line to begin the third quarter. Smith carried the ball four times on the ensuing drive and scored Jesuit's first touchdown of the game on an electrifying, 13-yard carry. Smith carried the ball up the middle and was able to reach the end zone through several tacklers, diving and reaching the goal line for Jesuit's opening score.

  • Allen scored on its first drive of the second half to re-take a 23-point lead. The Rangers continued their impressive start to the second half on its second drive, highlighted by completions of 14 and 21 yards by Hilberth to give the Rangers the ball at the Allen 38-yard line. Smith took over once again inside the Allen red zone, scoring a two-yard touchdown with 1:19 remaining in the quarter.

  • The kicking tandem of Gonzalez and senior James Koshakji laced an onside kick following Smith's second rushing touchdown of the year, a ball which was recovered by Jesuit but called back due to an offsides penalty. Allen recovered the second onside kick but were forced to punt, giving Jesuit the ball back aat its own 23-yard line.

  • Allen scored on its first two drives of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Holman completed a 34-yard pass to Allocco on a third-and-five from the Ranger 2-yard line to extend a seven-play, 37-yard drive, but a fourth-down conversion attempt failed and Allen was able to run out the clock.
