Third-Quarter Rally Unable to Topple Plano Rushing Attack

The Rangers cut a 21-point deficit to a one-possession game midway through the third quarter, but two fourth quarter touchdowns from the Plano Wildcats resulted in a 42-27 setback to close a three-game road trip on Friday at John Clark Stadium.

Junior EJ Smith set a new season-high with 181 rushing yards, scoring three touchdowns to lead the Jesuit offense. In addition, Smith closed the contest as the team's leading passer, completing a 43-yard reception to senior Travis Whisler in the first quarter. Senior Brody Hilberth completed four passes in his first varsity start at quarterback, throwing for 21 yards while rushing for 72 yards and a touchdown. Senior Jack Hajdu snagged a team-leading three receptions, finishing the contest with 18 yards.

Junior Tommy Roy led the team with nine tackles, including seven solo stops, a tackle for loss and forced fumble. Senior Collin Lark recovered a fumble, securing the defense's first turnover since Sept. 28 against McKinney Boyd. Junior Zach Pendola closed the game with eight stops as junior Jack Barton racked up seven tackles. Pendola and junior Mitchell Campbell teamed up on a key tackle-for-loss during the team's third-quarter rally.

The Rangers were held to 5-of-10 on third downs but converted two fourth-down plays to keep extended drives intact. Jesuit scored on two of three trips to the red zone and finished the contest with 395 total offensive yards. Plano carried the ball 45 times for 429 yards and six touchdowns.

How it Happened

  • Plano scored a game-opening touchdown on its first drive of the game, forcing a Jesuit three-and-out before marching 71 yards down the field in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead.

  • On Jesuit's ensuing drive, a 43-yard halfback pass from Smith to Whisler on third down put the Rangers into the red zone. Smith completed the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to tie the contest, 7-7, at the end of the opening quarter.

  • The Wildcats quickly regained control of the game, scoring on the first play of their second drive before stopping the Rangers on fourth down to regain possession with 9:02 remaining in the second quarter. However, the Ranger defense provided a spark as Roy forced a fumble recovered by Lark to give Jesuit the ball at the Jesuit 26-yard line.

  • Jesuit's second turnover of the game gave Plano the ball back with 5:54 remaining in the half, and the Wildcats responded with a 13-play, 95-yard drive that eclipsed 5:39 of the remaining second quarter before Cumby punched in a 13-yard touchdown run to send Plano into the half leading 27-7.

  • Plano took the half-ending touchdown and took a 21-point lead on the first play of the second half as Cumby erupted for a 49-yard touchdown run that spotted the Wildcats a 28-7 lead with 11:48 remaining. The Jesuit rally began on a 40-yard rushing touchdown by Smith, an electrifying run up the middle that culminated with a dive into the end zone to cut the lead to 14 points with 10:40 remaining in the third.

  • Jesuit forced a three-and-out by Plano and regained possession with 8:02 remaining in the third quarter. Hilberth scored a 55-yard rushing touchdown on a jet sweep rush to close the gap to a single possession as the Rangers closed the gap to 28-21 with 7:36 remaining in the third.

  • Plano scored on the second play of the fourth quarter to return the lead to 14 points. Jesuit seemed poised to score on a 14-play, 55-yard drive but lost possession on a fumble at the Plano six-yard line. Plano marched down the field once again on a methodical, 12-play drive that used 5:28 of the fourth quarter and was capped by Hines' third touchdown of the game with 2:17 remaining in the game.

  • Smith found the end zone for the third time on a nine-yard run to the near side, beating two Plano defenders to the pylon for his 10th rushing touchdown of the season.
