Ranger Rally Falls Short, Prosper Scores Overtime Upset

A trio of 16-point performances fell one point short as the Rangers fell to the Prosper Eagles in overtime, 61-60, on Tuesday at Prosper H.S. The Rangers head into a critical district bout against Allen with a 6-2 record in district play and will be given the opportunity to take control of the district on Friday at Walsh Gym.

Seniors Max Abmas, Anthony Hollerich and Julius Marble recorded 16 points apiece to be the Rangers three double-digit scorers as the Rangers struggled from the floor, shooting 37.5 percent as a team. Jesuit would tie Prosper in rebounds as both teams secured 36 boards. Marble secured a team-leading eight rebounds, followed by seven from Hollerich and six from junior Darryl Brown. Senior Connor Wilson was a key role player for the Rangers, recording three steals and two assists. Sophomore Gavin Perryman and Wilson scored five points each.

Jesuit opened the contest on an 8-2 run as Hollerich scored the team's first eight points. Prosper took a five-point lead at the end of the first, closing out the opening period on an 11-0 run. A 7-2 Jesuit swing in the second quarter brought the Rangers to within two points, but the Eagles returned the lead to five with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter. Wilson buried a three-pointer in the final minute of the first half to send the game into the halftime break with Prosper holding onto a 29-27 advantage.

Prosper grabbed momentum in the third quarter, scoring 15 points in the third while forcing three Jesuit turnovers and holding the Rangers to a 3-for-9 clip from the field to take an eight-point lead heading into the fourth. Abmas buried a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, a trio of three-pointers while cut the lead to three with 2:16 remaining.

With the game winding down to its final moments, Wilson corralled his third steal of the game at the 1:33 mark, but the Rangers were unable to convert the opportunity into a go-ahead basket. Prosper was unable to take advantage down the stretch before Hollerich earned the chance to tie the game with 53 seconds remaining in regulation. The senior converted both free-throw attempts and the two squads went into overtime tied, 54-54.

Marble raced in for the overtime-opening bucket to put Jesuit into the early lead but Prosper would hold the Rangers without a bucket until the final buzzer. The Eagles raced to a three-point lead with five seconds remaining in overtime and a last-gasp attempt from Perryman rimmed out before being tipped in by Marble at the buzzer for the final score of the contest.

Jesuit will return home on Friday, Jan. 25 for a big district showdown against reigning state champion Allen. The Rangers defeated then top-ranked Allen, 78-72, on Jan. 2 behind 24 points from Abmas and 21 points from Perryman.
