Ranger Hoops Closes Trip to Philadelphia Against St. Joseph's Prep, La Salle

Philadelphia, Pa. – Jesuit concluded a three-game trip to Philadelphia with losses to St. Joseph's Prep and La Salle on Dec. 13-14. The Rangers would drop a 73-62 decision to St. Joseph's, a fellow Jesuit school, on Dec. 13 before a determined comeback fell just short, 57-55, to La Salle the following day.

Junior Gavin Perryman hit seven three-pointers and scored 23 points, but the Rangers fell victim to a hot-shooting St. Joseph's Prep and dropped a 73-62 decision to the Hawks on Friday evening. The Hawks shot 57.5 percent from the floor and held the Rangers to five points in the second quarter after the Blue and Gold scored 21 in the opening eight minutes.
 
Senior Darryl Brown kept his double-double streak alive with 11 points and a team-leading 15 rebounds. Brown has scored three consecutive double-doubles, dating back to the championship game of the Knights of Columbus Tournament against Tascosa, adding three assists and a definitive block to his final stat line. Fellow senior Eli Steger scored eight points with a 4-of-8 clip from the floor and collected three rebounds. Junior Will Cordle buried a trio of three pointers to finish with nine points while senior Luke Lucido closed the bout with three points and three rebounds.
 
Jesuit kept up a strong early season on the glass, as 15 of the team's 31 rebounds came on the offensive end and led to 12 second chance points. However, 14 turnovers led to 20 St. Joseph's Prep points. Jesuit led the Hawks, 21-16, after the first quarter but were held to five points in the second as St. Joseph's took a 30-26 lead into halftime. The Rangers brought the Hawks' lead to one point twice in the third quarter, but St. Joseph's pulled away down the stretch and kept a double-digit lead through most of the fourth quarter to seal the win.

The Rangers pieced together one of its strongest performances of the season, shooting above 50 percent from the field while only turning the ball over seven times, but La Salle was able to hold off Jesuit's late fourth-quarter rally and handed the Blue and Gold a 57-55 setback in the team's final day in Philadelphia.
 
Perryman led all scorers with 24 points, burying five three-pointers to anchor a Jesuit offense that finished the contest 8-of-18 from behind the arc. Brown pushed his double-double streak to four games with 10 points and to rebounds while classmate Eli Steger added six points and five rebounds. Perryman additionally led the team with three assists while juniors Camden Roy and Will Cordle scored five points each. La Salle combined to hit 13 three-pointers, shooting 13-of-23 from behind the arc as Jesuit found drastic success inside the lanes, outscoring the Explorers, 22-6, in the paint.
 
Jesuit closed the opening quarter on an 8-2 run, taking a 16-13 lead into the second. The Rangers seemed poised to pull away during the early portions of the quarter as Perryman scored eight points over the first two minutes of the quarter to propel Jesuit to a six-point lead. However, La Salle took the lead with 2:31 remaining before halftime before converting a three-point play to go into the break with a 31-27 advantage.
 
La Salle built a double-digit lead with 2:17 remaining in the third before Jesuit closed the quarter with six unanswered points to enter the final stanza trailing by six points. The two teams continued to trade punches throughout the fourth before Jesuit made its final push with 52 seconds left, trailing by seven points. Perryman and Roy hit three-pointers to answer buckets by La Salle before senior T-Monk Simons scored a layup with seven seconds left to bring the Rangers to within two points. The Explorers capped the win, keeping Jesuit away from stealing the inbound pass as time expired.

Jesuit will head back to the Metroplex and play Sulphur Springs on Friday, Dec. 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
