Rangers Clinch Top Seed, Co-District Title With Win over Boyd

Jesuit Dallas earned the fifth University Interscholastic League (UIL) District Championship in program history with a 70-56 win over McKinney Boyd on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Boyd High School. The Rangers close the district season on a six-game winning streak and an 11-2 mark in league play to split the district championship with Allen but earn the top seed in the district courtesy of the regular season sweep of the Eagles.

Senior Max Abmas scored a team-leading 18 points, hitting four three-pointers while adding six assists and three steals. Classmate Julius Marble added 17 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Gavin Perryman was a key catalyst for the Rangers during a big second quarter, finishing the game 6-of-13 from the field for 15 points.

Junior Darryl Brown added a team-leading nine rebounds, as senior Anthony Hollerich scored eight points and dragged down six boards. Jesuit scored 26 points in the paint and added 12 second-chance points off of 14 offensive rebounds while the Ranger defense held Boyd to a 34.5 clip from the floor while narrowly out-rebounding the Broncos 41-37.

Boyd hit four three-pointers in the first quarter to fight off seven opening quarter points from Marble, sending the two teams into the second tied, 16-16 after senior John Phillips found Hollerich for a floating jumper at the buzzer. Perryman erupted for 10 points over the first 5:30 of the second quarter, leading the charge for a Jesuit offense which used an 18-11 run to take a 34-27 lead with 2:40 remaining in the half. Abmas and senior Connor Wilson hit three-pointers for the Rangers as Jesuit held Boyd to 1-for-3 shooting over the final minute to take a 42-30 lead into halftime.

Back-to-back three-pointers to open the third quarter by Abmas kept the lead above double digits as the Rangers continued to hold off a determined Broncos three-point shooting contingent. Marble threw down his first dunk of the game off of a missed three-pointer, sparking the Rangers closing the third quarter shooting 4-of-9 from the floor while Boyd went 2-of-12 from the field to allow the Rangers a 13-point advantage going into the fourth quarter.

Two additional dunks by Marble over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter allowed the Rangers to cross the 60-point plateau to give the Blue and Gold a 15-point lead with 4:54 left. The Rangers maintained the double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Jesuit Dallas will battle Sachse on Tuesday, Feb. 15 in the bi-district round of the UIL 6A State Tournament. The contest is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Berkner H.S. and will be broadcast live on JesuitRangers.org. The Mustangs will enter the matchup with an 8-6 record in district play and an 18-14 overall mark after closing the regular season with a 3-3 record over the final six games of the season.
