Fifth-Inning Rally Pushes Rangers Past Lobos

A two-run, fifth-inning rally propelled Jesuit Dallas to a 3-1 record at the conclusion of the first weekend of the year as the Rangers toppled the Little Elm Lobos, 4-3, on Saturday night at Wright Field. A go-ahead RBI from senior Garrett Reuben, his second RBI of the game, proved to be the difference as the Rangers earned their third win of the year heading into next weekend's Jesuit Baseball Classic.

The Rangers (3-1) scraped together four runs on only three hits, recorded by the top of the Jesuit order. Sophomore Connor Chavez concluded his strong opening weekend with a 1-for-3 performance, scoring two of the team's four runs. Junior Braxton Boyle added a hit and two runs as sophomore Jordan Lawlar secured the team's final hit of the game and junior Tanner Jones drove in a run.

Senior Ben Shepherd earned his first win of the season with five innings on the mound, striking out four while allowing three runs on seven hits. Senior Cooper Shawl earned his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh while striking out one batter.

In stark contrast to Thursday's matchup, a bout between Jesuit and Little Elm which saw neither team record a hit over the first four innings, Chavez and Boyle singled and scored to give the Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI from Reuben and Jones. Little Elm scored in the top of the second to cut the lead in half as the Lobo pitching contingent held Jesuit without a hit over the next three innings.

Jesuit saw the lead evaporate in the top of the fifth as Little Elm recorded two runs on two hits. In the bottom of the fifth, Chavez reached base with a lead-off error, moving to second on a walk by Boyle. A single to the shortstop by Lawlar loaded the bases before Chavez scored the game-tying run on a passed ball. Reuben would give Jesuit the lead on a sacrifice fly to right field, spotting Shawl a one-run lead in the seventh.

Little Elm looked determined to tie the game after a leadoff walk put the game-tying runner aboard, but junior Tyson Pointer caught the runner stealing to eliminate the threat. With one out in the inning, Shawl allowed a runner aboard with a walk and saw the game-tying run move to into scoring position after an infield single, but the senior shut the door with a strike out and fly out to clinch a three-win weekend for the Blue and Gold.

Jesuit Dallas will host its annual Jesuit Baseball Classic from Thursday, Feb. 28 – Saturday, Mar. 2 and will compete in six games at Wright Field.
