Junior
Diego Sierra notched his team-leading eighth goal of the season to salvage a 1-1 tie against district foe Plano on Friday at Kimbrough Stadium. The Rangers move to 0-3-2 in district with the tie heading into a critical, three-game home stand which begins on Friday against McKinney.
Â
Jesuit out-shot Plano, 15-13, but yielded six fouls and seven corner kick attempts to the Wildcats. Sierra led the team with six shots, two shots on goal and a second-half tally which was aided by senior
Chris Flabiano's first assist of the season. Sophomore
Ryan Shea, junior
Dakota Schau and senior
John Scott Lacina additionally recorded one shot on goal apiece, and senior
Connor Tullis made seven saves in goal.
Â
Both teams created quality first half chances as Plano earned two corner kicks in the opening two minutes before the Rangers launched three attempts from the corner within the span of a minute. The two teams nearly battled to a scoreless first half, but Plano scored in the 34th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Â
Midway through the second half, a shot by senior
Aleksei Ramirez was blocked by the Wildcats' defense. The loose ball resulted in a cross from Flabinao which got behind the Plano goalkeeper, allowing Sierra to head the ball in for the equalizer. The Rangers would manage only one shot on goal over the final 20 minutes of the contest while Tullis made a save at the buzzer to keep the tie intact.
Â
Jesuit will begin its home stand on Friday, Feb. 8 against McKinney before welcoming Plano East on Feb. 12 and Plano west on Feb. 19. The Rangers and Wildcats will meet again on Tuesday, Mar. 5 when the Jesuit soccer team celebrates senior night at Postell Stadium.
