Three dominant performances helped the Rangers win the 2019 Jesuit Dallas Rugby Showdown as Jesuit moved to 10-1 on the year over an eyebrow-raising run at Postell Stadium. Jesuit opened the tournament with a 71-0 win over the North Texas Barbarians and a 45-12 decision over Allen on Mar. 9 before clinching the championship with a 33-14 win over St. Pius X on Mar. 10.
Â
The final game of the showdown presented a matchup worthy of the namesake as St. Pius X and Jesuit entered the matchup with identical, 2-0 records. After an opening nine minutes which saw the two teams exchange field position but not break through, senior
Noah Villasana broke the scoreless tie with a try at the nine-minute mark. Senior
Jacob Jowdy took a stolen scrum to pay dirt for a 12-0 lead before classmate
Matt Mancillas dove into the goal area to complete a game-opening, 19-0 run.
Â
Senior
Evan Davis broke through the Panther defense for a huge run in the second half before Jowdy snagged a kick from Jesuit's own 22-yard line and ran through the Allen defense to score a game-breaking tie, giving Jesuit a 33-7 lead with eight minutes remaining. The Ranger defense clinched the win down the stretch, only allowing St. Pius into the goal area in the final seconds of the bout.
Â
On Saturday, Jowdy kicked off the event with a pair of tries in the first half against the Barbarians Jesuit Dallas took a 45-0 lead at the beginning of the second half off tries by seniors
Evan Davis, Villasana and Jowdy, junior
Mitchell Campbell and sophomore
Luke Aldinger. Senior
Jacob Rhoades scored twice in the second half as additional touches by sophomores
Jack Judson and
Sy Mendenhall capped the victory. Jesuit's defense, anchored by seniors
Maximillian Telfer and
Mac Jordan, blanked the Barbarians to give Jesuit decisive momentum heading into the second game of the tournament.
Â
Allen hoped to avenge its 35-14 loss to Jesuit on Feb. 21, but the Rangers derailed the Eagles' hopes with a 31-0, game-opening run. Senior
Niko Triantos scored the first try of the game, Jordan bolstered the lead with a try off of an interception and Davis planted the ball in the goal zone off of a stolen scrum to build a 19-0 lead before Campbell finished the first half rout with a try at the four-minute mark to send Jesuit into the break holding a 26-0 lead.
Â
The Ranger defense continued to excel, keeping its shutout streak intact for over 80 minutes of game time before Allen broke through for a try early in the second half. Aldinger and Jowdy finished the contest with second half tries to send Jesuit to its second victory of the season over Allen.
Â
Jesuit will return to Postell Stadium for its final two games of the season. The Rangers will first battle Plano on Friday, Mar. 29 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff before a critical Texas Rugby League battle against Westlake on Apr. 6.
