After a near three-hour rain delay, Jesuit Dallas erupted out of the gate for an early try scored by senior
Noah Villasana before the Ranger defense locked down on Cy Fair en route to a 19-0 win in the quarterfinals of the Rugby Texas State Tournament on Saturday at Postell Stadium. With the victory, Jesuit Dallas will move to the state semifinals, where the Blue and Gold will battle St. Pius X at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 27.
Â
The opening 10 minutes was marked by sloppy play as Jesuit dominated possession but failed to move past midfield while getting used to the sopping wet turf. A Cy Fair penalty set the stage for the opening score as Jesuit pushed the scrum down the field until Villasana found an opening through the Warriors' defense on the far side of the field to give Jesuit a five-point lead 12 minutes into the game.
Â
The Rangers knocked on the door throughout the remaining moments of the first half and were on the edge of the goal line in the final seconds, but Cy Fair forced a turnover in extra time to send the Blue and Gold into the halftime break with a 5-0 lead.
Â
In the second half, both teams exchanged possessions, but the Jesuit defense held firm to keep Cy Fair out of the goal area. Jesuit would clinch the victory with a pair of second half tries from senior
Jacob Jowdy as the determined Ranger defense earned their third shutout of the season.
Â
Jesuit and St. Pius will meet for the second time this season on Apr. 27 for the opportunity to earn a berth in the state championship game. The Rangers defeated the Panthers, 33-14, in the championship game of the 2019 Jesuit Dallas Rugby Showdown on Mar. 10.
