Jesuit rugby competed among the state's best programs at the Rugby Texas State Championships over the weekend in Austin, Texas. The Rangers dropped a 28-12 decision to St. Pius X before losing in penalty kicks to Katy in the third-place game to finish the year with a 13-2-1 record, notching the team's highest win total since the 2015 season.
Â
St. Pius leapt out to a 21-0 lead in the first half before senior
Will Woodard got the Rangers on the board with a late first half try before sophomore
Robert Triantos tacked on the conversion. Junior
Ethan Lane added the team's second try, but it was not enough to a persistent and determined Panthers team.
Â
In the third-place game, Jesuit took a 15-5 lead at halftime off of tries from Triantos alongside seniors
Evan Davis and
Sy Mendenhall. A second half try by senior
Mac Jordan built the lead to 20-10 but Katy battled its way back with 10 unanswered points down the stretch to send the game into penalties tied, 20-20.
Â
Both teams missed their first penalty attempt before Triantos put the Rangers ahead 1-0 on a successful kick. Katy would score on its next two tries while Jesuit went 1-for-2 with the converted kick made by senior
Sean Bowen. The Tigers opened the door for the Rangers with a missed kick, but Jesuit could not take advantage of the situation and extend the penalty kicks as Katy won third place on Jesuit's missed strike.
Â
Nationally-ranked towards the end of the season, Jesuit's rugby team excelled in 2019 under the leadership of second year head coach
Matthew Upton '02. The Rangers won the 2019 Jesuit Dallas Rugby Showdown in March and went 6-1 against divisional opponents before upending Cy Fair, 19-0, in its first playoff game of the season.
