Electric Opening Quarter Aids Victorious Effort in District Opener

Jesuit Dallas erupted for 21 points in the first quarter and held the Plano West offense in check to open the district season with a 38-3 win over the Wolves on Friday at Postell Stadium. The Rangers even their overall record to 2-2 with the victory and take a critical first district victory ahead of a road battle against McKinney Boyd on a short week.

Senior Rance Holman led the charge with 194 yards passing and four touchdowns as classmate EJ Smith celebrated his first full game back from injury with three touchdowns on 89 all-purpose yards. Christian Allocco caught his first career varsity touchdown reception as Jonathan Paredes added his second score of the year. Junior Parker Brown logged a career-long, 27-yard field goal to cap Jesuit's scoring.

Defensively, senior Chase Walker snagged his first career interception to set up Jesuit's second touchdown of the game, making six tackles while recording an additional pass breakup. Senior Jack Barton led the charge with eight tackles while junior Peter Melle forced a fumble recorded by Plano West on a five-yard sack. The Ranger defense has dominated opponents in the third quarter this season as the Blue and Gold have shut out all foes in the third quarter through four games this season.

Jesuit totaled 352 yards of offense while holding Plano West to 215. The Rangers held the Wolves in check on third and fourth-down situations as Plano West went 1-for-10 on third downs and 0-for-2 on fourth downs. By comparison, Jesuit converted 6-of-12 third downs, 1-of-2 fourth downs and were especially lethal in the red zone, scoring on five of six opportunities inside the 25-yard line.

The Rangers will travel to McKinney ISD Stadium for the first time on Thursday as Jesuit will face McKinney Boyd on Thursday night. The Broncos fell to Plano East, 21-14, on Friday after sweeping a 14-7 fourth quarter lead slip away as the Panthers scored the go-ahead touchdown with six seconds remaining. Thursday's game will be streamed live by WFAA along with the standard Jesuit Dallas Football Radio broadcast beginning with the Legacy Texas Pre-Game Show at 6:30 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Jesuit received the opening kickoff and the offense responded with a 69-yard drive capped by a 40-yard touchdown reception by Smith. Holman checked the ball down to Smith who then was able to break free off of the downfield blocking by Ryan Lengyel, Dave Morales, Gabe Morales, Branson Hickman, Jacob Phillips for the opening score.

  • Walker jumped the pass on Plano West's third play from scrimmage to give Jesuit the ball back at the Wolves' 30-yard line before a six-play drive which saw junior Jake Taylor get the ball inside the five-yard line with four carries for 31 yards turned into points on a one-yard plunge by Smith for a 14-0 lead with 7:40 left in the opening quarter.

  • Senior Tommy Roy pressured Plano West quarterback Andrew Picco to force a punt which Allocco returned 44 yards to the Plano West eight-yard line. Holman hit Paredes on a corner route for Jesuit's third touchdown of the game with :30 remaining in the first.

  • Jesuit drove down the field on a 10-play, 57-yard drive that finished the first quarter. Brown lined up for a 27-yard field goal to start the second quarter to increase the lead to 24 points. Plano West faced a third-and-15 on their next drive, but Melle's strip sack forced a punt on what would be a three-play drive for -10 yards.

  • After the two teams traded drives for a majority of the second quarter, Jesuit took the ball at its own 45-yard line with 2:31 left in the half. A Holman pass was tipped, but junior Kyle Heckel caught the loose ball for 23 yards to bring the ball to the Plano West red zone. Holman then completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Allocco, who made an athletic play and got his feet down in the end zone to increase the lead to 31 points.

  • At the end of the first half, Plano West attempted a 58-yard field goal from the Jesuit 41-yard line. The kick was short, which allowed sophomore Robert Fitzgerald to elefctrify the crowd with a 59-yard return which nearly resulted in a half-ending touchdown for Jesuit.

  • The Ranger defense shut out Plano West in the third quarter, scoring on a nine-play, 62-yard drive which took 4:52 off of the second half clock. Smith caught his third touchdown of the game, beating triple coverage to increase the Jesuit lead to 38 points. Plano West would score its first points of the game on a 33-yard field goal to end the shutout bid.

  • Junior Connor Naughton entered the game for Jesuit, orchestrating a 10-play, 26-yard drive that eclipsed 8:15 of the fourth quarter and returned the ball to Plano West with 21 seconds remaining. On a critical third-and-13, Naughton found junior Sam Morales for a 13-yard reception, extending the drive and allowing Jesuit to run the clock out on the victory.
