Two Second Half Goals Propel Jesuit Past Lions

Jesuit moved to 3-3-0 in district play, taking a 2-0 lead early in the second half and hanging on against a talented McKinney team for a 3-2 win on Friday night at McKinney H.S. The win completes a historic week for the Rangers, who move themselves back into the district playoff picture with a two-win week which included the 600th career victory for head coach Charlie DeLong on Tuesday.

Senior Diego Sierra scored Jesuit's first goal while juniors Benton Bacile and Ryan Shea added two critical goals down the stretch. Junior Arnold Perez-Valenzuela finished the contest with two assists. Jesuit outshot McKinney, 25-11, but the Lions earned nine corner kick attempts. The Jesuit defense held firm against the Lions as seniors Parker Christensen and Geoff Miller racked up five and four saves, respectively, to help keep Jesuit in the lead.

Jesuit scored first as Sierra took advantage of a ball deflected off of a Perez-Valenzuela free kick, sending Jesuit into halftime with a 1-0 lead. In the 44th minute, Jesuit drew a penalty kick and had the opportunity to take a two-goal lead, an opportunity that Bacile converted for his second penalty kick goal of the year. McKinney added a penalty kick of its own in the 53rd minute to cut the lead in half, but Jesuit regained a two-goal lead in the 66th minute as Shea headed in a corner kick by Perez-Valenzuela.

The Rangers clinched the win by holding firm after the Lions scored in the 76th minute to cut the lead back to a single goal. Jesuit only allowed one shot over the final four minutes, a header saved by Miller, and ran out the clock for the win.

Jesuit will host Plano East on Tuesday to conclude the first circuit of district play. The Panthers are 3-3-0 in district play, but enter Tuesday's game on a two-game losing streak.
