Charlie DeLong Wins 600th Game as Jesuit Shuts Out Plano

Jesuit Dallas head coach Charlie DeLong earned his 600th coaching victory on Tuesday as the Rangers used a late second-half goal from junior Ryan Shea to defeat Plano Senior H.S., 1-0, at Postell Stadium.

With the victory, DeLong becomes the 19th soccer coach in high school history and the third high school coach in Texas to reach the 600-win plateau, providing another milestone for the wildly successful coach who is the second-winningest active coach in Texas boys' soccer.

The history-making goal came in the 69th minute on a play that began with a goal kick. Senior Diego Sierra secured a breakaway pass from midfield and took a shot from the right side of the penalty area. The shot deflected off of the glove of Plano's goalkeeper and landed in front of a fast-moving Shea, who was able to touch the ball into the empty net for the go-ahead score.

Jesuit was outshot, 21-13 by the Wildcats but the senior goalkeeping tandem of Geoff Miller and Tom Jubin combined for the shutout. Miller made a pair of saves in the first half before Jubin entered in the second, making three saves including a solid stop on a short-distance breakaway shot after Shea's tally. The Jesuit defense warded off eight Plano corner kicks while placing 13 shots on the Wildcats.

Coach DeLong's decorated career was further cemented on Tuesday as the DeLong has won 87 percent of the games he has coached and is a 17-time state champion at Jesuit. DeLong has earned two consensus Texas Coach of the Year honors (2010, 2017) since Jesuit Dallas joined the University Interscholastic League (UIL) in 2004 and is a four-time Dallas Metroplex Coach of the Year (1988, 2006, 2010, 2017).

DeLong helped the Rangers capture 15 Texas Christian Interscholastic League (TCIL) state titles and a pair of UIL titles in 2010 and 2017. In 2010, the Rangers became the first private school to ever claim a UIL state championship title in any sport when the Rangers bested Strake Jesuit in penalty kicks to capture the UIL 5A championship. Jesuit ended the season as the top-ranked team in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), one year removed from finishing the 2009 season ranked eighth in the nation.

Coach DeLong and the Rangers repeated the feat in 2017, defeating Texas top-ranked Arlington Sam Houston, 2-1, in overtime of the championship game to become the School's first athletic program with multiple UIL state championships. Jesuit closed the season ranked third in the nation according to USA Today.

Throughout his time at the helm of the Ranger soccer program, DeLong has mentored several professional athletes and Jesuit Dallas Hall of Famers. DeLong coached Puerto Rico national team member Scott Jones '02, who was drafted in the second round of the 2007 Major League Soccer (MLS) Superdraft, U.S. National Team member and nine-year MLS veteran Kenny Cooper '03, 2012 MLS draftee Ian Kalis '08 and Kingsley Bryce '11, who was selected with the 28th pick of the 2015 MLS draft by the Chicago Fire. Entering the 2018 season, DeLong has coached 11 Jesuit Dallas Hall of Famers.

Licensed to coach by the USSF in 1971, DeLong has also coached a number of top club teams including seven North Texas State Club champions, five Region III club champions and two runner-up teams in the National Club championship. Prior to his career in coaching, DeLong played professionally on the reserve squad for the Dallas Tornado in the North American Soccer League (NASL) for six seasons in the 1970s, and the Houston Summit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, reaching the MISL title game in 1980.

DeLong joins former Klein H.S. head coach Allen Baker and El Paso Del Valle head coach Bruce Reichman as the only three coaches in Texas history to reach 600 wins. DeLong is currently the winningest active coach in UIL 6A.
