Plano Scores Late Bucket to Defeat Jesuit at Walsh Gym

The Rangers were limited to only 26 attempted shots by a hard-nose Plano defense, as the Rangers were unable to stop a late Wildcat rally en route to suffering a 38-36 loss on Tuesday at Walsh Gym.

Senior Darryl Brown led the team in scoring with 16 points, hitting 6-of-10 shots while converting 4-of-6 free throws. Junior Gavin Perryman went 3-for-3 from behind the arc, finishing with 15 points. Junior Cal Linn scored three points as senior Eli Steger scored two points to wrap up the Rangers' scoring column. Perryman additionally led the team with eight rebounds, Brown added five boards and two blocks and junior Shane Hatzmann secured a team-leading two assists.

Plano led, 9-5 after the first quarter, and the Rangers trailed by nine with 6:24 remaining in the half. Jesuit closed the half on an 15-4 run to tie the game heading into the halftime break. The rally was capped by eight unanswered points over the final 2:11 of the second quarter as a layup by Steger and three-pointers by Linn and Perryman preceded a layup by Brown on a feed from Hatzmann at the buzzer.

Jesuit took its first lead since the first quarter with 7:18 left in the third after Brown earned a trip to the free-throw line converted both free-throws. The Rangers would take a two-point lead into the fourth quarter after back-to-back layups by Brown answered Wildcat baskets, sending Jesuit into the final eight minutes of regulation with a 29-27 advantage.

Perryman buried a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, spotting the Rangers a five-point lead. Six unanswered points by the Wildcats gave Plano the lead back, as the teams traded leads until Jesuit led, 36-35, with 3:19 left in the fourth. However, Jesuit would be held without a field goal over the final three minutes of the game, and Plano scored the go-ahead bucket with nine minutes remaining to score the win.

The Rangers will return to action on Friday against McKinney. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at McKinney H.S. Jesuit will return to Walsh Gym on Tuesday, Feb. 11 to battle Plano East.
