Jesuit turned aside an early six-point deficit in the first quarter and controlled most of the pace of an eventual 58-48 win over J.J. Pearce on Friday in Richardson, Texas. The tandem of seniors
Gavin Perryman and
Conor Moore collected most of the team's offense, but a stifling defense shut the Mustangs down and propelled Jesuit to its sixth district win.
Â
Perryman went 11-of-20 from the floor and hit four three-pointers, scoring 30 points for the fourth time this season. Moore added 17 points, and both seniors recorded 10 rebounds. Perryman, Moore and junior
Ben Johnson recorded two steals each as Johnson added eight points with two three-pointers and a layup.
Â
Pearce leapt out to a six-point lead four minutes into the first quarter, but a Perryman tip-in jumpstarted a 13-0 Ranger run that saw Jesuit shoot 6-of-7 while holding JJ Pearce to 0-2 down the stretch to take an 18-11 lead into the second. Jesuit would hang onto the lead throughout the second quarter, using five unanswered points on a three from Johnson and a layup by Moore to head into halftime with a four-point lead.
Â
Jesuit took control in the third, outscoring the Mustangs, 14-7. Moore scored six points in the quarter while Perryman added five as Jesuit his four buckets while forcing four JJ Pearce turnovers. The Rangers' last three buckets of the third quarter sparked a 16-2 run that gave Jesuit a 53-35 lead with 4:13 left, all but locking up the key district win.
Â
The Rangers will return to action on Tuesday, when Jesuit welcomes Lake Highlands to Walsh Gym for a 7 p.m. tip.
