Jesuit Scores Decisive Win in Tournament Opener

A sensational first quarter and efficient offensive distribution allowed Jesuit Dallas to secure a 79-17 win over Fort Worth South Hills in the first round of the 58th Annual Knights of Columbus Bob Stras Dallas Classic on Thursday at Walsh Gym. The Rangers advance to take on Amarillo Tascosa in the tournament semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m, a game that will double as the annual Teddy Bear Toss.

Senior Ryan McCormick led the way with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting, anchoring a Jesuit lineup that shot an eyebrow-raising 61.5 percent on the night. Seniors Grant Kostos, Tai Kryger and Sky Tschurr scored eight points apiece while seniors Samuel Dunkerley, Will Mansour and junior Michael Mathie tacked on six points each.

Seniors Ryan Leal, Quinn Mashburn and junior Charlie Needham each scored five points, senior Will Inkman secured a team-leading seven assists while scoring four points, junior Owen Berry added three points and the scoresheet was closed out by senior Ben Johnson and Dylan Gibbons, who each secured two points.

Every member of the Jesuit Dallas roster scored in the win, as Jesuit outscored the Scorpions, 48-10 in the paint and scored 27 points off of 15 turnovers. The Rangers added 16 points off of 13 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded Fort Worth South Hills, 36-11. Jesuit out-scored South Hills, 28-7 in the first quarter and shut out the Scorpions in the third, holding South Hills to a 20.6 clip during the game and 1-for-18 from three-point range.

The Rangers will next square off against a Tascosa squad that defeated Lincoln, 70-54, on Thursday. Jesuit will face either Highland Park or Frisco Lone Star in the final day of the tournament, either at 12 p.m. in the third-place game or in the tournament championship at 1:30 p.m.
