A 12-strikeout performance by senior
Tucker Huhn helped Jesuit rebound from a tough loss against McKinney North on Thursday with a 6-3 victory over Denton Braswell in the first day of the 2021 Frisco Tournament of Champions. The Rangers dropped their first game of the tournament, 7-6, at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.
Â
Huhn moved to 2-1 on the year after his career day on the mound, more than doubling his strikeout total on the year while allowing no runs on three hits over six innings. Junior
Myles Tucker continued to swing a hot bat, recording at least one RBI in both games and picking up two hits a double and an RBI against Braswell. Junior
Jake Storey added another double for the team while seniors
Nick Lazzara and
Gardner Lawrence each drove in a run.
Â
Senior
Jordan Lawlar scored the team's first run, reaching base on a walk to lead off the game and moving to third on a steal and passed ball before cruising home on Tucker's double to right center. A sacrifice fly by Lawrence plated Tucker to give Jesuit a 2-0 lead in the first. Huhn worked his way out of a bases loaded jam with no outs in the top of the second, striking out three straight batters to keep Jesuit in the lead.
Â
The Rangers scored three in the bottom of the fifth, as the top of the order struck again. Lawlar led off the inning with a single before Tucker and senior
Connor Chavez each earned walks to load the bases. Lawlar scored on a wild pitch, Lazzara drove in Tucker with a sac fly, and Chavez came home on a failed pick off attempt by the Bengals.
Â
Jesuit's final run of the game was scored after Storey and senior
Grant Senick secured hits to move a runner into scoring position. Senior
Matthew Gonzalez scored on a groundout to push the lead to 6-0. Braswell scored three in the top of the event, but junior
Tommy Delaney forced a double-play groundout before sophomore Luke Isett was able to limit the damage and clinch the win for the Rangers.
Â
Lazzara put a charge into the Jesuit offense against McKinney North, going 2-for-3 with a triple. Senior
Drew Messick tripled to center in the fourth and was able to advance to home on a throwing error, capping an inning that saw Jesuit flip a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead with three runs on two hits and two North errors in the frame. Delaney finished the game with two RBI, both groundouts that were able to drive in runs.
Â
Junior
David Day started on the mound for the Rangers, striking out four over 5.2 innings. Sophomore
Jack Barr entered the game inheriting a runner on third and a one-run lead but struck out the side to send Jesuit into the seventh with a two run lead after senior
Gavin Perryman scored on a fielding error. However, the McKinney North bats woke up in the top of the seventh, racking up three runs on three hits to take the lead, then stopped the Ranger rally in the bottom of the seventh to hand Jesuit its third loss of the season.
Â
Jesuit will return to action Friday to take on Frisco Wakeland and Frisco Liberty. The first game will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday at Reedy H.S. before the Rangers return to Dr. Pepper Ballpark for the nightcap against Liberty.
