A complete game effort on the mound by senior
David Day provided enough space for the Rangers to score four runs and earn their third win of the week, 4-3, over Lake Highlands on Saturday. The key road victory over the Wildcats gives Jesuit a 3-0 record in district play as the Blue and Gold followed a sweep of district title hopeful JJ Pearce with Saturday's one-run win.
Day struck out six batters over the full seven inning appearance, earning his fourth win of the year. Allowing two earned runs on six hits, Day only walked one batter and hit another to limit the damage and made the outs when needed, leaving six Wildcats stranded on base. The win marks the second victory for Day on the mound this week as the senior struck out four over three innings of work to help Jesuit defeat Pearce in a wild back-and-forth affair on Mar. 16.
Senior
Gardner Lawrence recorded Jesuit's only RBI of the day, a fielders choice in the fifth that scored fellow senior
Jordan Lawlar for what would ultimately be the deciding run in the game. Jesuit once again showed great awareness on the base paths, scoring two runs on wild pitches in the first inning. Senior
Drew Messick continued his strong year with his fifth multi-base hit of the young season, a double in the top of the third.
In the top of the first, senior
Connor Chavez earned a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by junior
Myles Tucker. Both Chavez and Tucker would score on wild pitches to give Jesuit a 2-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Lawrence hit a single to center, moved to second on a passed ball, and later scored on a passed ball to push the lead to three runs. Jesuit's fourth run of the game was set-up by back-to-back walks to start the inning, which provided the opening for Lawlar to score after a pair of fielders choices were unable to take out the speedy senior shortstop.
Lake Highlands made a run at the lead in the bottom of the sixth, hitting back-to-back singles to start the inning. A fielder's choice recorded the first out of the inning, but the Wildcats would cut the lead down to one with two outs in the inning. Day responded with his biggest strikeout of the day, working his way back fro a 2-1 count to retire the side with the game-tying run in scoring position. The game tying run reached base once again in the bottom of the seventh, but Day ended the inning with another strikeout to clinch the win.
Jesuit Dallas (17-4, 3-0 UIL) will conclude the two-game set against Lake Highlands on Tuesday at Wright Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Rangers will then travel to Irving on Friday, Mar. 26 to take on MacArthur before traveling to Waco on Mar. 27 to battle Waco Midway.Â
