Hines Comes up Cluch in Penalties, Rangers Bound for Sweet Sixteen

Sophomore Cole Hines made three saves in penalty kicks, including stops on the sudden victory extra kicks that allowed the Rangers to advance off the foot of senior Sullivan Scott and move into the Sweet 16 of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Soccer Tournament on Friday. Jesuit upended McKinney Boyd, 5-4, in penalties following a scoreless tie in the Region I-6A Quarterfinal on Friday at McKinney ISD Stadium.

Jesuit and Boyd battled to a scoreless tie after 80 minutes of action, forcing overtime. The Ranger defense dug their heels in once again, holding a Bronco offense that took 14 shots and eight corner kicks scoreless. Hines recorded four saves during regulation and overtime while the Rangers additionally forged several quality chances during the game. Senior Spence Gilker launched Jesuit's first shot on goal of the game in the 17th minute, an attempt that was saved. In the second half, a 54th minute shot by senior Benton Bacile nearly broke the tie, sneaking past the Boyd goalkeeper but careening off the post.

Boyd ramped up the pressure in the second half, earning 10 corner kicks over a 15-minute span. Hines made a huge save on a header in the 61st minute, and a shot from just outside the box in the 78th minute was blocked by the Jesuit defense, a unit anchored by seniors Jason Davis, Parker James, Reid Weinberger and junior Alec Gomez that held Boyd in check.

The Broncos earned two corner kicks over the last three minutes of regulation, but the Rangers were able to keep Boyd away from the goal to force overtime. Hines recorded overtime saves in the 83rd and 99th minute to push the game into penalty kicks, marking the second time this postseason that Jesuit would decide the contest in penalties.

Jesuit Dallas made two out of their first three penalty kicks as senior Grant Koshakji and Gilker found the back of the net, but Boyd went 3-for-3 to take the lead. Hines recorded his first save of penalty kicks on Boyd's fourth attempt, making a diving save to stop a shot by the Broncos' Baily Helms. Junior Arnold Perez-Valenzuela tied penalties at 3-3 with a make of his own. Senior Benton Bacile took to the line after Boyd converted on its fifth penalty, and with the game on his foot tied the contest once again, sending penalties into sudden victory.

Hines recorded his second save of penalties on Boyd's sixth kick, making a great read to help move penalties into the seventh round. The sophomore made perhaps his most electric save of the season on an attempt by Boyd's Austin Woodruff, diving to the right and punching the ball up with enough force to send it over the crossbar, providing Jesuit the opportunity to clinch the win. Scott fired the game-ending attempt into the left side of the net, ending the contest and sending Jesuit to a regional semifinal matchup against El Paso Eastlake.

Eastlake is currently unbeaten on the year with a 16-0-0 record, and is the top-ranked team in the state according to MaxPreps. Ranked 11th in the nation, the Falcons continued their playoff run with a 6-2 win over Byron Nelson on Friday. Eastlake opened the playoffs with a 5-0 win over Odessa in the bi-district round before securing a 4-1 win over Southlake Carroll in the area round. Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday evening, with a location and time yet to be determined.
