Jesuit Rugby Finishes Unbeaten Season With Convincing Victory Over Brother Martin (La.)

5/8/2021 5:49:00 PM

The Rugby Texas Single School State Champion Jesuit Dallas rugby team punctuated an undefeated season with a resounding win at the Sebastian Cup Championships, routing Louisiana state champion Brother Martin, 72-10, at Shrine on Airline in New Orleans on Saturday.

Rugby seniors Sy Mendenhall, Robert Triantos and Jacob Wooten scored two tries apiece for the Blue and Gold, who close out the season with an unblemished, 8-0 record. Seniors Alec Piotrowski, Dimitri Papanicolau, Oscar Jarmon joined juniors Charlie Freeman and Benoni Mesfin in the scoring column as Jesuit Dallas erupted out of the gate with 53 unanswered points, including 46 first half points to take a major lead into the break.

The Rangers won the Rugby Texas Single School State Championship last weekend with a 36-28 victory over Strake Jesuit. Saturday's scoring output was the team's highest of the season and the team's first game with 70 or more points since a 75-0 win over St. Thomas (Houston) in the 2019 Bishops' Cup game.

Since taking over the Jesuit Dallas rugby program in 2017, Jesuit Dallas Sports Hall of Fame inductee and head coach Matthew Upton '02 has led the Rangers to a 28-10-2 overall record, a state tournament berth in 2019 and a championship in 2021.

The 2021 lineup was anchored by a group of 12 seniors, which consisted of Freddie Bowhill, Will Delaney, Oscar Jarmon, Jack Judson, Sy Mendenhall, Marshall Neri, Dimitri Papanicolau, Aidan Piotrowski, John-Michael Quinn, Robert Triantos and Jacob Wooten.
