Jesuit Swimming Headed to State Following Sensational Performance at Regionals

2/12/2022 7:37:00 AM

Jesuit Dallas will be represented in four events at the 2022 University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championship as the Rangers finished fourth overall at the Region II-6A meet on Monday and Tuesday at the LISD Westside Natatorium in Lewisville. Sophomore William Savarese swam call-up times in the 200 I.M. and 500 free as the Rangers' 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams were also called-up to starte after sensational swims during a meet that threatened to break state records.

Savarese clocked a school-record 4:29.85 in the 500 free to earn his first state berth in the event, besting his previous mark of 4:31.14, recorded at the North Zone TISCA meet in late 2021 to become the No. 2 call-up in the event. The sophomore will also return to the state championship field of the 200 I.M., earning the second call-up with a third-place, 1:49.95 in finals.

The 400 free relay squad of junior Leonardo Pelaez, James Savarese, Alexander Hung and William Savarese finished second in prelims before recording a 3:09.17 in finals, coming up a second shy of the school record set in 2015 but slicing nearly two seconds off the team's previous season best time. The top three finishers in the event, Southlake Carroll (3:00.88), Prosper (3:09.03) and Jesuit (3:09.17) bested the field by nearly four seconds.

Jesuit's 200 free relay earned the call-up as well, finishing fourth overall at regionals with a 1:26.28. The Rangers were the No. 3 call-up to the state championship meet as the Blue and Gold's relay team, consisting of the same lineup as the 400 free relay, held their prelim seeding, slicing a second off of their 1:27.12 in finals to finish fast enough to make the call-up cut-off time of 1:26.94.

The Rangers' 200 medley relay team of junior Palmer Bowman, Jaden Giunta, Charles Henderson and Samuel Steffler scored for the Rangers by finishing second in the B-Final and 10th overall, securing a 1:40.60 total relay time. Pelaez reached the A-Final of the 200 free, finishing fifth overall with a 1:43.36 while James Savarese won the B-Final with a 1:43.85. Savarese would also finish 10th overall in the 100 free, clocking a 47.41 to place second in the event's B-Final. Hung qualified for the 50 free A-Final, placing eighth overall with a 21.98.

Additional scorers for the Rangers included Giunta in the 200 I.M. (2:06.28, 15th) and 500 free (5:09.11, 15th), Blake Butz (22.75, 15th) and Samuel Steffler (22.84, 16th) in the 50 free, and the diving duo of sophomores Sam An (258.85, 13th) and Thatch Balady (253.70, 14th). Charles Henderson clocked a 52.56 to place 11th overall and third in the 100 fly B-Final, as Palmer Bowman placed 13th overall in the 100 back with a 55.93. Teddy Scherer scored in the 100 breast with a 1:05.41, placing 15th overall.

Jesuit's state qualifiers will next head to the UIL 6A State Championships, set for Feb. 18-19 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of UT-Austin. Preliminaries will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18 with finals starting at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19.
