Jesuit Rugby Punches Ticket to State Final With 17-10 Win Over St. Thomas

4/29/2022 8:50:00 PM

Senior Benoni Mesfin, junior Neil Lancaster and sophomore Luke Lamont scored first half tries and the Ranger defense locked down in the latter half and held on for a 17-10 win over St. Thomas on Friday night in Houston, Texas. With the victory, Jesuit earns a berth in the Rugby Texas State Championship game on May 14 and retain the Bishops' Cup for the third consecutive year.

Lancaster opend the scoring midway through the first half, a try that was followed by a stolen scrum converted by Lamont minutes later for a 10-0 lead. With the first half winding down, Mesfin broke through into the try area to keep Jesuit's game-opening scoring run intact as a conversion from junior Jordan Mason spotted Jesuit a 17-0 lead. St. Thomas was held scoreless until the waning moments of the first half to send Jesuit into the break with a 12-pointlead. In the second half, Jesuit kept the Eagles out of the goal area, allowing a late try that cut the lead to seven but holding on down the stretch to clinch the victory.

Jesuit will face either St. Pius X or The Woodlands in the Rugby Texas Championship game, which is set for May 14 at Huns Field (4107 Nixon Lane) in Austin, Texas. The Panthers and Highlanders will determine the second participant in the state championship game on May 7.
