A dramatic shoot-out win over division-leading Northwest propelled Jesuit into the championship game of the Dallas Stars High School Showcase Tournament, a Thanksgiving weekend tournament played from Nov. 24-26 in StarCenter throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Jesuit finished the weekend with a 4-2 record, opening with three consecutive wins.
Â
The Rangers toppled Denton County, 5-2, in the tournament opener on Nov. 24. Sophomore
Everett Sahadevan led the team with two goals while seniors
Connor Sughrue, Whit Taylor and sophomore
Allen Zhang added additional tallies. Sahadevan picked up an assist to finish with a team-high three points while junior
Thomas Fino picked up two assists and senior
Jack Bowdich tacked on an assist for the Jesuit scoresheet. Freshman goalie
Miles Tranquada earned the win with 18 saves.
Â
Jesuit secured its second consecutive five-goal performance with a 5-1 win over Frisco to close out a successful first day at the tournament. Fino, Bowdich, juniors
Conor Parro,
Mitchell Zenick and senior
Liam Placke lit the lamp for the Rangers as Zhang, Sughrue, Parro, junior Maclain Croskey and the senior duo of David Schroeder and
Asher Yarbrough picked up assists. Senior
Misha Saratovtsev secured the win in goal, racking up 33 saves against Frisco.
Â
The Rangers' third win of the tournament was earned with a 5-2 decision over Prosper. Sophomore Owen Deloach, junior
Tyler Woods, Sahadevan, Parro and sophomore
Wade Bryan scored against the Eagles. Zenick, Deloach and Sahadevan each recorded an assist, Fino added two assists to the Ranger effort, and the senior pairing of
Liam Placke and Whit Taylor finished the contest with one assist apiece.
Â
Jesuit's first loss of the week came in a 4-2 setback to Canada's J.H. Bruns, as unassisted goals by Sahadevan and Sughrue were not enough to topple the Broncos. The Rangers earned their way into the championship semifinal with a 3-1 pool play record, and Jesuit defeated Northwest, 2-1, in a shootout to punch their ticket to the championship game.
Â
Sahadevan scored off of an assist by Zhang late in the first period to take the lead, but Northwest notched a goal with 3:55 left in the third to force overtime. After a scoreless extra session, the match went to a penalty shootout where Fino was the only shooter out of six skaters to hit the back of the net, sending Jesuit to the final. The Rangers dropped a 3-2 decision in the final to J.H. Bruns, as goals by Zhang and Bowdich put the Rangers ahead, 2-1 with 8:42 left in the second before the Broncos scored back-to-back unanswered goals, including the game-winner with 9:27 left in the third to clinch the win.
Â
Jesuit will return to league play on Wednesday, November 29 when the Rangers battle Flower Mound/Marcus. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:45 p.m. at the Richardson StarCenter.
