The Cup Comes Home: Rangers Capture Varsity Cup Over Strake Jesuit

4/26/2023 7:42:00 PM

Jesuit Dallas trailed Strake by two early in the first half, but rattled off 17 unanswered points to take a convincing lead and ultimately dispatch Strake Jesuit, 27-14, to capture the 2023 Rugby Texas Varsity Cup Championship on Saturday at Novelli Field in Houston, Texas. The Rangers avenged their lone loss of the season and finish the 2023 campaign ranked 19th in the nation with an 11-1 record.

Junior Dylan Wachsman started the scoring for the Rangers with a hard-fought try before the Crusaders scored their lone try of the first half, picking up the two-point conversion to take the early lead. Junior Jacob Lehman put the Rangers up for good with a try of his own, sending Jesuit into halftime with a 10-7 advantage.

After the two teams exchanged possessions without a try scored, junior Chase Brown broke away from the pack for a long run to increase the Jesuit Dallas lead to 10 points. The punctuation mark during a highly physical game came later in the half, as the Jesuit forwards contingent drove the scrum several yards into the try area, helping Jesuit capitalize on one of several critical Strake turnovers for a 22-7 advantage midway through the second half.

Senior Neil Lancaster barreled his way past the Crusaders for the final try of the afternoon. Strake scored late in the second half to close the gap, but the Rangers held firm down the stretch until the final whistle to claim the Varsity Cup.
