Jesuit Dallas golf earned a trip to Georgetown on Tuesday, securing the program's first team berth at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championship since 2018 with a third-place finish at the Region I-6A Tournament. The Rangers put themselves in contention for the state berth with a sensational first round and held firm on day two to hold off a surging field with several clutch birdies down the stretch.
The Rangers were led by senior
Max Chan, who carded a team-low, three-under round of 69 on the second day to close out the tournament with a 145. On day one, Chan garnered momentum with three birdies on the back nine, a run that helped spark a -1 on the front nine on Tuesday. The New Mexico State University signee birdied the 12th, 16th, and 18th holes on the back nine while shooting par or better on eight of the final nine holes to finish the tournament tied for 11th.
Junior
Reese Roberts was Jesuit's second lowest scorer, following an even par 72 on day one with a 75 on day two for a 147 total score, finishing the tournament tied for 18th place. On Monday, the University of Missouri verbal recruit hit three straight birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, adding another birdie on the par-three 17th hole to finish out the round with a 72. Roberts would birdie the 17th again on day two, aiding to the Rangers effort with a -1 on the back nine during the second round.
Sophomore
Spencer Carter closed out the tournament tied for 20th place, erupting for a two-under 70 on day one and finishing the tournament with a 148. Carter erupted out of the blocks for a -2 after two holes, hitting birdies on the first and third hole before adding his third birdie of the front nine on the seventh hole. Carter added an eagle on the 13th hole before closing a sensational round with a birdie on the 18th, posting the team's lowest round of the first day in the process. During the second round, Carter birdied the 13th and 16th on the back nine, carding a 78 to turn in another strong card for the Rangers' team total.
Sophomore
Jack Clancy posted a 150 total score, opening the tournament with a 77 before shooting a one-over par 73 on day two. Clancy closed Monday by posting five straight holes at par or lower, including birdies on the 14th and 18th, then used that momentum to birdie the first hole on day two, adding a birdie on the fifth and 13th hole during his final round. Connor Chisum rounded out the Rangers' quintet with a 156 (74-82), scoring a birdie on the 18th hole on Monday before scoring his second of the tournament on the second hole of day two.
Jesuit finished the tournament with a combined team score of 587, tabulating a 292 on day one followed by a 295 on day two. The Rangers finished 12 strokes ahead of Denton Guyer for the final Region I-6A berth at state, finishing behind first place Highland Park (574) and second place Southlake Carroll (581).
The 2024 UIL 6A State Championship Tournament will take place from Monday, April 29 to Tuesday, April 30 at the White Wing Golf Club in Georgetown, Texas. The approximately 6,700-yard, par 72 course was built in 2001 by three-time major winner and 1978 World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Billy Casper.
