Jesuit Dallas controlled Saturday's Rugby Texas Varsity Cup Championship game from wire-to-wire, scoring 27 unanswered points to start the game en route to securing a 27-14 win over Strake Jesuit at Ranger Stadium. The victory awards Jesuit with the Varsity Cup for the third time in four years as Jesuit punctuates a dominant 2024 season that saw the Blue and Gold earn an 11-0 record while outscoring opponents, 484-67 during the season.
Senior
Thomas Villalba opened the scoring with a breakaway run early in the first half, finding the try area for an early 5-0 lead that was converted by senior
Dylan Wachsman to increase the lead to 7-0. Wachsman would add a penalty in the waning moments of the first half, sending Jesuit into the break with a 10-0 lead.
In the second half, Villalba finally broke through after a long stint of high-level, back-and-forth rugby, spotting the Rangers a three-possession lead. Down the stretch, seniors
Luke Lamont and Mitch Sullivan scored to provide the Rangers with critical insurance tries, which proved to be game-clinching scores as Strake scored 14 points during the final minutes.
Since the 2021 season, Jesuit Dallas rugby is 37-5 and have gone unbeaten twice, first securing an 8-0 record in 20-21 before earning the unblemished, 11-0 record to cap a dominant 2024 campaign. The Rangers shut out four opponents during the season and only allowed more than one try on three occasions. Jesuit Dallas was ranked 17th in the nation according to the most recent
Goff Rugby Report Boys School poll, and with the win is guaranteed to finish the year as the top-ranked team in the state.
