Jesuit Dallas rising senior
Reese Roberts made history over the weekend, becoming the first true high school golfer to win the 115th Texas Amateur Championship, held at Trinity Forest Golf Club. The University of Missouri verbal commit dominated the field en route to the victory and secured an exemption to the 124th U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament, set for August 12-18 in Chaska, Minnesota.
Â
Roberts won the championship by two strokes, finishing all four rounds under par and fending off a late charge from Wakeland golfer and 2024 UIL 5A Individual State Champion Luke Colton. Roberts began the tournament with a one-under 71 before a jaw-dropping performance on day two, finishing nine strokes under par to turn in score of 63 to take a considerable lead on the field.
Â
On day three, Roberts stayed in the red with a four-under 68, taking sole possession of the lead heading into the final day of the tournament. With the field chasing him, Roberts maintained a two-shot lead on the front nine, going three-under at the turn. Roberts birdied the 10th hole, then recorded a masterful birdie on the 13th, sending home a 15-foot put that spotted the rising senior a four-shot lead with four holes left.Â
Â
Another birdie on the 16th all but clinched the title for Roberts, who closed out the tournament with a bunker shot followed by a two-putt on the 18th to secure the gold.
Â
The historic victory adds Roberts's name to an impressive list of Texas Amateur Champions, including Bob Estes, Will Zalatoris, H.L. Edwards, Charles Coody and Ben Crenshaw. In addition to his exemption to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championships, Roberts also earns exemptions into five Texas Amateurs.
Â
Making history has become commonplace for Roberts, who helped Jesuit Dallas to one of its best finishes in program history this spring at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A State Championships. Roberts became the first Ranger since Jordan Spieth '11 to record a top three individual finish, earning the bronze medal in the two-day UIL 6A Tournament while helping Jesuit post its best team finish since 2008.
