ALLEN, Texas - Jesuit Dallas senior
Kingston Stephens continued his run through the state wrestling circuit, winning all four matches at the UIL Region 2-6A Wrestling Championships at Allen High School the past two days to claim the 113-pound weight class and earn an automatic invitation to the state championship meet.
Jesuit scored 55 points in the championship. Allen won with 289 points, followed by Conroe Woodlands College Park with 202, Rockwall with 162, Rockwall Heath with 144 and Plano West with 93.5.
Stephens had two falls, a technical fall and won the regional title with a major decision, although he nearly pinned his opponent with a near-fall late in the second period in the finals. He repeated as the region champion and improved to 34-0 this season.
Senior
Trevor Leap went 2-2 in the 185-pound class, winning a pair of consolation bouts via fall in his weight class.
In the 132 class, senior
Alex Shomin won his first match on Friday before losing a pair of contests, including Cael Brubaker of McKinney Boyd who won the weight as the No. 2 seed.
Mike McCoy also stared off strong with a first round win in the 175 class, but dropped his second round bout to eventual champion, Carter Nekvapil of Allen. The Ranger junior then went 1-1 in the consolation side of the bracket.
In the 285 class, senior
Parker Sherman also won his opener but was relegated to the consolation with a loss in the second round. He also went 1-1 in the consolation side as he attempted to wrestle back into a third place finish.
Senior
Dash Llana went 1-2 in the 120-pound class and senior
Thomas Czuppon went 1-2 at 138.
Sophomore
Adam Jackson went 1-2 in the 106 division. His first round opponent, Bilal Habib of Plano East, went on to win the bracket. In last month's Frank Halloran Ranger Classic, Habib lost to Stephens in the finals of the 113 class.
The UIL Class 6A State Championship is February 13-14 at The Berry Center in Cypress, Texas.
