A five-run fifth inning was all senior pitcher
Kyle Muller needed, posting another dominant performance on the mound to push the No. 11 Rangers to 7-1 in University Interscholastic League (UIL) District 9-6A play with a 5-0 win over Nimitz on Friday at Wright Field.
Striking out nine batters, Muller improved to 5-0 on the year, logging his third consecutive shutout while lowering his earned run average on the year to a microscopic 0.23. At one point in the contest, Muller retired 15 consecutive batters, carrying a no-hitter 5.1 innings into the contest before the Vikings finally broke through in the sixth.Â
The University of Texas commit has yet to allow more than three hits in a single game this season, improving his strikeout total to 75 on the year, and has not allowed an extra-base hit since a Mar. 10 contest against Prosper.
Muller also led the team at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Fellow fourth year
Pete Hamrick also drove in a run a RBI by lacing a single through the right side, while seniors
Matt Horvath and
Jared Bond, junior
JT Mix and sophomore Maccoy Lopez scored a run each.
In the fourth inning, junior
Will Guzman reached base on a Nimitz error to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by senior
Jared Kengott pushed Guzman to second before a pitch hit Horvath, placing two runners on with one out. Another fielding error by the Vikings, a wild pitch and passed ball gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead. Hamrick took a 1-0 pitch through the right side to plate Bond before Muller cracked a two-out, two-run double that increased the lead to five.
Jesuit Dallas will return to Wright Field on Tuesday, Apr. 12 to "Battle for the Saddle" against W.T. White. First pitch is currently scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
